45 Cowboy Special

Hi all,

I started cowboy shooting and have been looking to reload the new cartridge from Starline in 45 Cowboy special. It is basically a cut down 45 LC powder puff load to help compete against the 38 special shooters.



I typically load with 5 grains of Clays in the 45 LC.

Supposedly data is similar to 45acp.

For dies, you size using a standard 45LC, and use a special 45ACP roll crimp die since the 45 crimp die wont go low enough.

Does anyone have experience with this cartridge?

No, why don't you try some round ball loads in your 45 colt cases first. Less recoil than a 38 special when I did it. I think I used 7gr unique,I can't remember.

I use a standard 45 LC case, 200 gr. coated cast slug, with 4.4 gr of bullseye. 597fps out of 4 1/2" barrel Vaquero, 720 fps from a 7 1/2" blackhawk, and 919 fps from a 24" 1873. load is a little dirty, but works great for cowboy.

Thanks. I use bullseye for my regular pistol loads. Nice to see some data for 45LC. Looking to get rugers and an 1873 and some sort of shotgun, probably an 1897.. Just started CAS this past Feb.

What is the advantage in using a reduced length case? Wouldn't a reduced load with fiberfill or cardboard wad produce the same result?

Why not use 45LC mouse fart loads instead?

The point of cartridge (from my understanding) is to get better ignition and pressure when using less powder and smaller bullets. Mouse fart loads in 45LC leave a lot of unused volume in the case and the powder falls flat in the round when held horizontal. The round was designed for a big bullet with a lot of powder.

You can ultimately use less powder and smaller bullets with the 45 spc. 150gr or smaller. It was made to allow 45LC shooters to compete with the 38 special mouse fart loads.

The European champion in cowboy action shooting uses the 45 Cowboy special and Starline just got the license to start selling to the general public.

These rounds have been around since 2005, but were produced by starline under license to a guy who sold them exclusively. That license has since been bought and expired.

Anyway, looking for constructive feedback, not people stating the obvious things I have already tried.
