I am looking at a rifle to purchase, but need help to understand what is not clear to me. The rifle has been re-barreled with a neck chamber of .250". The standard for .22 cartridge is .2539" OD.
The seller does warn that this smaller chamber may not chamber stock/off the shelf ammo. But, he adds, this should not be an issue because the person who buys this gun is most likely a hand loader anyway.
Okay, so I can buy a Hornady Match Grade neck die in .250". Sounds easy enough until I reason that the ID of the neck will also get smaller if I squish the outside of the neck, right?
Then, a standard .2244" projectile will not fit. Right?
With this .250" chamber is the assumption that the brass must be turned? Meaning, to meet the .250" chambering requirement, you would not contract the neck, but shave the outside of the neck to .250". Is that right?
I don't have a neck lathe if that is what is required here. Of course, that can be purchased later, but it would be nice to know up front.
I have only been reloading for about 3 years, so I apologize if this is a totally stupid question.
