    Blazer Brass .45 - de-capping pin stuck

Ok, I know Blazer Brass isn't the best but I've got a bunch of it. In my last session I had a few frustrating issues with the de-capping pin getting stuck in the flash hole and pulling it out of the die. Its adjusted correctly per the Lee instructions. I am using a Lee Turret press. I was just wondering if anyone else is having or had issues with de-capping Blazer Brass. The pin is about as tight as I can get it in the die. Any other ideas?

    Thanks!

I had Lee Turret Classic also, I don't pull the handle all the way down, as long as the primer is just pop out of the brass then I stop right there and move the handle back to up position.

About tight isn't tight enough with the Lee's. I clean any oil off the pin and die with solvent, then tighten it real tight. As was said, adjust so that the pin just pops the primer out.

The pin length that protrudes past the die mouth should be the length thickness of two nickels.

Make sure the spent primers can fall free.

The problem is that the flash holes are often off center. So the pin is bending as it enters the flash hole. Not much you can do about that because it is just crappy brass.

You can either tighten the recapping pin as much as possible or buy another dedicated recapping die from Lee. Their pins are part of a larger diameter shaft that can be tighten so there is no movement. They are cheap and work very well.

The brass is marked Blazer because Schitt would have been too obvious.

I take the decapping pin, chuck it in an electric drill, and take the diameter down a thousandth or two using a file or emery cloth. Prevents it jamming up on small flash holes, and gives a bit of clearance for off-center holes.

FWIW, I also have to do the same occasionally when the tip of the pin gets mushroomed from normal use. The Lee pins aren't very hard.

Thanks for all the great advice fellas. As a minimum, I'll be ordering another de-capping pin from Lee and may chuck up the pin in the drill press and sand it down a bit. Blazer is certainly not my favorite but buying range brass you get a fair amount...

Also beware that most Blazer .45 cases are small pistol primer-sized.

Decapping pins come in two sizes, .071" and .060". Every once in a while, you find brass that has the flash hole a little smaller than usual and will cause you fits.

What is the current price for 1x small primer .45acp brass? I might have some. Will be keeping all Large Pistol Primer brass cases.

Actually, there's an .059" flash hole used on some Lapua brass (6BR Norma, for one), as well. Smaller than the normal smaller pin (which means custom ordering or modifying your pin if you run this brass.) Just to confuse things a little more.
