Managing you SD Ammo supply

My management and practice regime for SD ammo is very fundamental. Don't ever buy any. All my basic and readily available range ammo is my SD ammo. Simple and done. Don't have to worry about rotation, function, and all kinds of concerns I don't need.

This is another very good point. Let's all recall that fine hollow point bullets are available from such as Speer, Hornady, Federal, etc. It is quite possible to make our own versions of factory SD ammo.

The one concern would be an "activist" district attorney that, should you use your own reloads to defend yourself or your family, might try to claim in court that you "maliciously" made "extra-killer rounds". It's crap, of course, but remember we're talking about an activist DA here (e. g. the ones in California!). Then you'd have to go to the trouble of "proving" that your loads are not "malicious, extra-killer" loads. That's why some people recommend using factory rounds for SD purposes, so that particular legal attack vector is not available to such an activist DA. I do use factory rounds in my SD guns for just this reason. And that's also why I make loads that match the factory rounds, for range practice. Same idea as using Federal "Lawman" practice ammo at the range.

Now, in Free America states, the DA's would probably not care and in a few cases might even privately think, "well done on ya!", unless you used FMJ's, in which case they'd probably recommend hollow points for the future. :-)

I go through a box of HD ammo a year. Not because it will go bad, it will easily last your lifetime and a few others too. I shoot a box just to get a feel for it as my plinking ammo is loaded differently and most importantly as a function test in my gun. I keep 3 boxes handy and just take the oldest box to the range once a year (I have a few more than 3 now since I didn't want to buy ammo with the new rules, so I bought a bunch of boxes)
