Old Win AA vs new Win AA HS

Being new to reloading shotshells, I have been combing the forums and blogs regarding different hull loads, as I have read different hulls require different components. I bought several hundred, almost a thousand, of both types of AAs in 12g. I have noticed many dispute the manufacturer and many loading manuals/books that say they can be loaded exactly the same. My opinion, after loading almost 500 of each without adjusting the cam, or final crimp bushing, is there is but a minuscule difference in the final crimp. On the old school style, most have a completely closed crimp, with some having slight swirls, on the new style they are either completely closed, or have a small pin hole in the center. That's not enough of a difference for me to go to the trouble of adjusting anything.

As to the assertion the old style hulls can be reloaded more times than the new HS style, or the remington gun clubs, many I know reload about 10 times each and have noticed no real difference in hull durability. These folks shoot around 500 shells per month. Am I missing something, or is everyone else perpetuating a myth?? Why the bias against the new Win AA HS hulls? Some have proven they last longer than the older style compression hulls and do not have the reported "wad separation" that's been reported. Winchester disputes this and has paid no lawsuits regarding this, nor have they ever had a lawsuit stating this happened.

    My published load I'm using.

12g Winchester AA compression or HS hulls
21.5 gr Alliant Unique powder (my bushing only throws 21)
    WAA12 wad
    1 1/8 oz shot
    WIn 209 primer
1200 fps / 9100psi (likely a bit less, as I only get 21gr per throw)

Really? Nobody else loads these, and has heard the differences?

Published data I have seen is the same for both hulls. I use the older AA hulls.

Might want to check out Trapshooters.com in the reloading forum, lots of good info there.

Yes, same as I've seen, but many have stated they have noticed marked differences in the finished product. I've luckily not noticed much, if any, discernible differences. I have noticed the green STSs load well and consistent, but not more so than the AAs I've loaded. Just ordered another 640 STSs, as the older AAs are hard to find.

          ><

I have not had a hull separate so far on any two piece AA hull so far. Had Chedite hulls separate...but in all fairness, I reloaded them once to many and they were all shot through an O/U, easy to check the barrels when it happened.

I have seen load data for Steel shot which have different loads for the HS and one-piece AA hulls.

Don't know if you noticed....your link is comparing a new straight wall AA hull

            No difference, just load them.
Some hulls last more reloads than the others

I've not had any problems with newer or older Win AA hulls.

I'll admit that I've loaded up hundreds between the old style and new, but the pinhole vs. the tight crimp is not much to make any difference if you get either. The only real problem maybe is if you use pure #9 shot.

I have BAGS full of old AA hulls both red and silver. I even have a the old Winchester Western stamp on a bag full and I have one box of high basewad Winchester paper hulls. Paper or plastic if they shoot, use 'em up.
Anyway...here's a dearth of reasoning to ponder: http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Guns
