Being new to reloading shotshells, I have been combing the forums and blogs regarding different hull loads, as I have read different hulls require different components. I bought several hundred, almost a thousand, of both types of AAs in 12g. I have noticed many dispute the manufacturer and many loading manuals/books that say they can be loaded exactly the same. My opinion, after loading almost 500 of each without adjusting the cam, or final crimp bushing, is there is but a minuscule difference in the final crimp. On the old school style, most have a completely closed crimp, with some having slight swirls, on the new style they are either completely closed, or have a small pin hole in the center. That's not enough of a difference for me to go to the trouble of adjusting anything.
As to the assertion the old style hulls can be reloaded more times than the new HS style, or the remington gun clubs, many I know reload about 10 times each and have noticed no real difference in hull durability. These folks shoot around 500 shells per month. Am I missing something, or is everyone else perpetuating a myth?? Why the bias against the new Win AA HS hulls? Some have proven they last longer than the older style compression hulls and do not have the reported "wad separation" that's been reported. Winchester disputes this and has paid no lawsuits regarding this, nor have they ever had a lawsuit stating this happened.
My published load I'm using.
12g Winchester AA compression or HS hulls
21.5 gr Alliant Unique powder (my bushing only throws 21)
WAA12 wad
1 1/8 oz shot
WIn 209 primer
1200 fps / 9100psi (likely a bit less, as I only get 21gr per throw)
