To cannelure or not when reloading?

Question, have the opportunity to buy 9 mm JHP 115 gr. bullets for reloading but they have a cannelure. Any experience opinions with reloading pistol rounds with and without a cannelure?

It doesn't matter to me. I just crimp where it's correct for my OAL.

Yeah, me too..... but with revolver bullets that require a roll crimp as well as pistol/rifle calibers for lever guns, I actually prefer bullets with a cannelure. Don't care about 9mm. .45, etc....

As an aside..... I load quite a bit of 38-40, for use in lever guns. With lead bullets I have no issues because they have a nice crimp groove. However, I bought a bunk of pulled .40S&W jacketed bullets as they are the right diameter, weight, and profile (flat nose) for the rifle, but they have no cannelure. I found that even with a crimp, I tend to get bullet movement and set-back. So, I pulled out my old C&H cannelure widget/tool that puts a cannelure on a bullet, and presto - the bullets now crimp properly and hold tight until firing. Works great, and those pulled jacketed flat nose bullets are cheap and accurate.

Always looking for vintage Winchester and Marlin lever action rifles. Looking to sell? Know of one for sale? Drop me a line!

I prefer them with the cannelure, but it's exactly that- a preference. I suggest you get them just so you can learn your preference, since you've only tried without. Performance I have noticed no difference.

You won't have any issue..... for 9mm, it just won't matter one way or the other.

I seat at the cannelure. I found that sometimes, projectiles would dive into the case in competition if I didnt.

I did not notice the same shooting casually, like on a bench or plinking a few rounds. For accuracy, I just seat the projectile with no crimp.

No more cannelure 9 mill unknown jacketed bullets for me. Heck! The 115 grain
cannelure bullets just bounced off the cardboard targets at 7 yards.

If they are factory seconds, it could be because the cannelure is in the wrong location!

Doesn't mention that they are factory seconds but good point. I will definitely ask.

                        Thanks!

That would make for an interesting range day for sure and a short one at that! Lol

I buy whatever cheaper, but if they are same price then I choose cannelure on all pistol bullets.
