Dinged brass

Would like some opinion about some brass I have that have a ding in the shoulder area.

Is this still safe to reload with?

That ding is right on the shoulder. I would chuck them but I have thousands to choose from. Load one and see if it chambers. My guess is that it will hang up just before bolt locks up into battery.

My guess is that ding will pop right out when you shoot it and you’ll never be able to tell which one it was.

Shoot it., that little ding isn't going to affect anything, and it'll pop right out when it's fired.

If it resizes OK (+99%) then it will chamber and the ding will iron out upon firing. Then the case will possibly get dinged again upon ejection. Nothing to worry about.

Not if it's shot out of a bolt gun

I pick up a lot of .223 range brass that's been fired out of gas-operated guns. Most of the cases I see get dented about half way between the bottom of the shoulder and the bottom of the case. In my experience, dents in the shoulder area are rare and I usually toss those.

I have reloaded a lot of dad cases when they were dented in the shoulder. Never an issue so far.

I personally chuck them in the brass recycle bin.

The question is whether they'd be hazardous to use, or cause some sort of mechanical malfunction once resized and reloaded.. The answer to those two questions is "no". So, if they offend you aesthetically then toss them out. .223 brass is literally laying around everywhere.

I've seen bolt guns that deformed brass. Generally on the case mouth, when the case levers out and catches the front of the ejection port.

That can even happen when you size a case with too much lube on it.
