      It's legal to own.
No range will allow you to shoot it.
Illegal on BLM land In CA
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.
I really miss the good old Pomona Gun Shows.

Yes, it is legal. Only AP ammunition illegal in CA is handgun specific.

        30315.

Any person, firm, or corporation who, within this state knowingly possesses any handgun ammunition designed primarily to penetrate metal or armor is guilty of a public offense and upon conviction thereof shall be punished by imprisonment pursuant to subdivision (h) of Section 1170, or in the county jail for a term not to exceed one year, or by a fine not to exceed five thousand dollars ($5,000), or by both that fine and imprisonment.

Plenty of ranges allow you to shoot it. Every range I go to allows it. That includes the indoor and outdoor ranges I visit. Sure there are some that do not, but plenty more who do.

No rangers around San Diego allow it that I'm aware of.

It's completely legal, good ammo, but not good for accuracy or ballistics.

Any plain mainstream 55gr FMJ will group better and is likely cheaper, however barrels can be finicky and prefer certain grain/length ammo.

If you want practice ammo for 100yds and in, get whatever is cheapest, brass preferred but steel will do fine. 2, 3, 4" groups at 100 is completely fine.

For greatest accuracy, you'll need to test a wide range of loadings or roll your own.

Those shooting AR500 steel, the lower velocity xm855 is the same as FMJ or maybe easier on your steel.

I wouldn’t know, I live up north. Never had an issue on USFS or BLM up here, but we rarely see rangers. The ones that do stop just want to shoot the s*** and talk shop.

Edit: Is OP located down south?

OP is located up north, in SF Bay area.

Sac Valley allows green tip all year round, and I'm pretty sure Lincoln does too. They'll definitely allow it during winter.

I don't know about that. Level III body armor gets punched by M855.

Level iii body armor isn't an ar500 steel plate.

Bit it does pit the face, making rick O'shea more possible.

Still a strong risk of fire from sparks.

It's also been proven to be less accurate than the M193, due to the steel core not always being centered.
