I just loaded up some 38 spl with some very old Dupont Pistol #6.. it fires just fine.. a little smoky but works. Loaded with 125 Polymer coated truncated cones, 148 Wadcutters, and 158 Semi-wadcutters. You have to go looking back to Speer #6 to find data or PO Ackley #1.

I just dug into the back of the powder cabinet and found a few steel cans. The can of Win 296 on the left is marked with a price tag of $11.49 from Sunset Sports in Idaho Falls, Idaho. I moved from there in 1987.

I took some old 4831SC and shot it against new powder. Same speed. Keep it until it smells funky. Store it well so it lasts a lifetime.

I think the H110 is from the 80’s- possibly as early as the 60s. The Hurco and GreenDot are from the 70s- I think ... Regardless, I’ve loaded all of them in the accompanying shotshell/gauges sitting in front of each can over the past 60 days and have shot them all safely, and the performance has been great. The Winchester on the right hasn’t been used (by me) yet but it looks dry and fine, so I plan to use it in the future for pistol loads. I especially like the H110 in .410 because the burnt powder smells a little bit different than today’s H110.

Unless you get it wet or subject it to other extremes it will probably outlive you.
