    Is anyone reloading 7.62x39?

I finally fulfilled a longtime desire to own an SKS, only to find that the cheap Wolf steel cased stuff is no longer cheap (roughly $0.34/rd). It makes me wonder if there are people out there reloading it because I have never really seen or heard of anyone doing it as the milsurp and commercial stuff has been so cheap for so long. Also it seems like most of the components are short in supply, but hell, I have never really payed attention until recently. Anyone have thoughts?

I reload it. But I have not used it in a SKS. The stuff I reload I shoot out of a bolt gun. I use Accurate 1680.

I guess I'm not expecting bolt gun type of accuracy, more or less wondering if it's a fruitful endeavor..

I do it to get more accuracy out of my mini moreso than the savings.

That being said, PPU makes some really good ammunition for the caliber.

First of all, NO excuse for not having PLENTY of 7.26x39 stacked deep. Up until very recently, the stuff was very cheap (.17 per or so) So.... wait a minute and the prices will go back down. You can't reload it cheaper than Wolf can make it.

PPU brass is reloadable too. Win-win. Good ammo.

I do reload for my Mini30 and my bolt action rifles. I have lots of mil surplus and steel case for my SKS.
              I also use 1680 powder

I reload for an AR, precision.hunting and lead rounds.

I use 1680 on jacketed and 2230 on lead.

Really appreciate the replies, there's some good experience in these threads... i don't expect this rifle will have bench rest level accuracy, so im thinking quantity may be a more important factor than quality. That said, it sounds like my reloading bench efforts will be better served with a diff caliber and stack up some x39 once the Rona subsides... ugh, hard to swallow my pride and pay the dollar for the background check which ive completely avoided until now.

I’ve purchased the dies, powder and components to reload 7.62x39 but have yet to begin reloading for it. I can still buy it cheaper than I can reload it for now. But, having the ability to feed my AKs and SKSs if supply dries up is what motivated me to be ready to reload this cartridge. Finding reloadable once fired brass has been the most challenging.

I had the dies in my Midway cart and took them out. I have the brass, I can get it at my range as I am part of the brass sorting crew so I've picked up several hundred. I just can't justify reloading for it when I still have 3,000 rounds of steel cased ammo. Like Dragon points out, I can't reload for the same cost as the steel I already own.

I did start reloading for this caliber a while ago. This was for a CZ 527 Carbine, and I wanted to see what I could do for accuracy. The best steel cased ammo I shot out of it was Golden Tiger, and it was nor MOA, but was certainly usable for self defense or game at 100 yds.. I had not yet achieved better accuracy with the reloads for the CZ, when I tabled it for awhile. I was able to achieve the same accuracy as the Golden Tiger, about 1.5-2" at 100 yds.

I think that with the advent/popularity of powder coating lead cast bullets, you can actually lower the cost of reloading by making your own projectiles.

Steel case for my AK M70 and SKS, all day, everyday.

Why would I reload for a firearm that neither needs or deserves an optic.

                              100 yard firearm.
