At close, "in-home" range, birdshot is a good choice-especially in 12 ga.
I have a mossberg 500 in 20 ga with an 18" barrel. With the heavy turkey load from Remington, it will hull out an 8" dia circle in 1/2" thk plywood at 7 yds.

Ok, Ok I will give my worthless opinion, it don't matter under 20 ft or so, "its gonna leave a mark" past 20 ft, on a human use buckshot or equiv. To those who may be be "new" to firearms it ain't like the movies ya gotta aim. Shotguns do not scatter wide swaths of deadly shot at normal house distances. But MY house, with bowling alley like spans between rooms I use a high power rifle with a scope and night vision

In order of appearance... Bird, #4 Buck, Bird, #4 Buck, SLUG.
My thought is 2 invaders, and maybe a third that didn't get the message via the 1st 2 bird-buck combos.
