[question] 75gr ELD Match bullet for 223 - seat too deep?

    hi, folks,

I used the inexpensive 55gr bullet for my 223 reload. First time move to the Hornady Match bullets.

The bullet is much longer than 55gr BT, and I have to seat the bullet quite deep to ensure the ammo can fit in the mag.

The following picture shows 1)the bullet vs ammo, 2) the ammo barely fit in the mag, and 3) OAL is 2.249"

I only this one bullet and get uncomfortable, and reach out to experts here for advise. thanks.

(BTW, I use 24gr Varget in this load)

I use the 73grn ELDM in my 24" Wylde with good results.
They are loaded at 2.235 seated.

You might want to resize the photos to 640x480 and upload them again. If you need a tool to do that, download a copy of Irfanview.

You bought the wrong bullet for magazine feeding. Get the 73 ELDM. I've tried the 73 ELDM. They reload and feed fine, but in my two barrels, they didn't shoot as well as the 77 Sierra OTM and the Hornady 75 OTM.

Try using a steel magazine. See if you load to 2.26.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.
I really miss the good old Pomona Gun Shows.

Thank you, Andrews. And many thanks to others. Clearly, I made the mistake on the bullet.

Also, I tried manufactory Hornady 75 gr BTHP before, and like it with easy sub 1" group. Will 75 gr BTHP be a good choice too? thanks

[question] 75gr ELD Match bullet for 223 - seat too deep?

Yes the 75gr OTM BTHP is very good, or Sierra 77gr OTM BTHP. Both are recognized as excellent for service rifle competition. Many competitors use ELD or Sierra equivalent tipped bullets when single loading, but use those BTHP above for all rapid fired magazine fed strings of fire.

OTM BTHP = open tip match boat tail hollow point

                    * but be aware that Hornady sells 75gr factory ammo that is very slightly different as well. The reloading bullets 75gr OTM do not have a cannelure, the factory loaded ammo does (Superformance). Same bullet construction otherwise.

                    * Hornady also sells 75gr Black ammo that comes loaded with an exposed lead tip (HD Interlock bullet).

                      Andrew,

                      I am looking at https://www.cabelas.com/product/shoo...8.uts?slotId=2

It states " 75GR BTHP MATCH " , but didn't mention OTM or not. Is this the right now? I don't want to make the same mistake again.

                      Appreciate your help
