And those .308's are pretty darn full. I couldn't imagine putting anymore in.

If you load for SHTF , keep all your reload as Sammi spec COAL. Make sure all your rifle can run and cycle the same reload. Factory rifle barrel usually have very long throat for avoiding over pressure (jam Bullet into the land)

magazine length will be your limiting factor with semi-auto's, Unless you want to single feed, but that defeats the purpose.

Bolt gun can be single fed much easier but limits you to one shot. If it's a hunting rifle, you'll be limited to mag length once again (assuming you want more than one round available).

The Savage is factory with the shorter OAL, same as the M1A. Which is why I'm here asking. It doesn't seem right, but I don't know.

The Daniel Defense does have a longer throat. I will load to Saami or maybe to be able to feed out of the magazine if there's any extra room. Seems like a jump of ~.200 is extreme, again, why I'm here.

If you're judging length from cartridge base to ogive, your OAL cartridge length will vary depending on the shape of the bullet in use. Using your 308 loads as an example, if you load your AMAX's and SMK's to the same Base to Ogive length, your AMAX load will be way longer due to the longer nose on the AMAX.

Figure out what means more to you: ultimate accuracy or the ability to load from the mag. Work your loads to whatever standard you favor, and if it happens to fall into both (i.e. your most accurate load will still fit the mag) you're golden.

Store bought (aka factory) ammo is generally loaded to fit in a majority of guns. That means it fits in the majority of magazines. Accuracy is a bonus.

So load to Saami if interference with magazine loading is an issue.

Load others to Ojive plus some jump, ~.015.

I'm still curious about OAL due to Ojive measurements, like shorter than Saami OAL.

Every M1A I've reloaded or checked has a throat that is longer than where the ogive sits at SAAMI spec ammo. I can assure you that 175 Sierra's aren't jamming 65 thou into the lands.

                  Something doesn't jive here.
