    Transferring reloads...

My nephew, a new Los Angeles sheriff deputy wants some ammo for practice.

I told him, you have to crank the press, I can't give or sell it to you per CA law.

Or, I can sell you factory ammo at cost, but we need to have it logged at a gun shop.

    Is my position correct?

I can't say what the ammo is gonna be used for, specially since he is a deputy. ND, on the job, self defense, whatever. I just don't want a problem.

If he's LE, why doesn't he hit up the range master at his department? He should be able to get all the ammo he needs.

Has anyone really followed or got busted from these stupid laws? Everyone I know is still getting ammo from road trips, reloading, swapping, the usual. F these stupid laws.

If he is a sheriff. He can afford ammo.
Get as much time on the police range.
His backup gun should be the same caliber. Will the police range let him shoot his backup gun.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.
I really miss the good old Pomona Gun Shows.

The story of the reloader who sold the Las Vegas shooter the ammo and got prison time is still fresh in my memory. He never told anyone. They got his prints of the cases.

That may be true, but he is a young man in a new career with a baby and toddler. I am glad to give him ammo, but I told him he will have to crank the press.

BTW, he just sent me pics of the temporary hospitals and ERs being built. He is playing security guards for the facilities as they are being built in almost all community hospitals.

Something isn't right with this post. He is a Sheriff Deputy and doesn't get ammo from his department for practice? Then, you suggest that he reload his own and he doesn't want to take the time to do so? Not sure I would get involved with that individual at all cop or not.

There is nothing wrong here. He is my brothers son and he texted me if he could buy some ammo from me knowing I have quite a bit. I said yes but he has to crank the press if he wanted reloads. I have the same rule for my own son, so he learns and doesnt free load off my own labor.

I didnt get into it much because I have a life. He is a new sheriffs deputy so I dont expect him to know every gun law or know all the resources available to him. I dont know what the deal is at his work. I dont really care.

I was just asked to provide some ammo and I gave an answer that I knew protected myself. This convo lasted more than my convo with my nephew.

Is there a parallel with that case and this at all? Aside from the transfer

Yes. I asked if I was right not selling my own reloads to a relative.

Actually, I think that's not just CA law, but also Federal law. As I understand it, you're supposed to have a Class 6 FFL if you want to make reloads and sell 'em to people.

I know you said he's your nephew and all, but this really sounds like a police sting/setup operation. Stick to your guns (pun intended); he's got to do the reloading himself. He's got to pull the handle. This way, you're covered. Oh, and tell your brother about this, too. Seems he needs to have a talk with his son.

I'm not a cop, so I'll defer to the cops on this question: is it possible that there's a limitation on how much practice ammo they'll issue an officer? If there is, then that may be why he's looking to get some reloads, as inexpensive practice ammo.
