    Powder turning green?

    Hello

I am new to reloading and Hogdon Benchmark has become a favorite powder of mine for .223 precision handloads. I recently had to pull a set of bullets and dumped the powder back into the jug without carefully inspecting. It turns out that the powder from the pulled rounds turned pretty green, a big contrast from the initial silver color. Is this indicative of the powder deteriorating? Will it be unsafe/affect accuracy if I use it?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

i would call Hogdon first and ask if the casing could have turned it green by contact after loading or is it possible a mold. But at least go on record before trying to use it again. contaminated is contaminated unless Hogdon says different.

I'm gonna guess contact with copper jacketing and brass (copper/zinc).

      Does it smell right?

TMK it gets red when going bad.

I'm not exactly sure what good powder is supposed to smell like so I can't tell if it smells off.

you'll know when it's bad though, Acrid sour smelling and red, red dust.

I just dumped an entier pound of imr 4227 due to rust in the steel can. old powder that was given to me. so no idea how it was stored, Apparently not very well.

I had 8 pounds turn Lily green in the jug. I didn't trust it so I dumped it.
When it smells like cat urine it's really bad and that happened on another 8 pounds of Hodgdon 5010 in a jug as well.

                solvent smell is good.

acrid (kinda like burnt electrical) is bad.

Really not a safer place to keep powder than in a cartridge.

Update : after speaking with Hodgdon, they said it was fine and should not pose any safety concern.

Looks like Lynnjr threw out a couple hundred dollars worth.
