Request for beginning advice

Hello, I am interested in starting to reload in the little free time I have. I plan on only really reloading my 270 win for hunting. I am completely new to this and was just seeking some general advice as to where to start.

Buy a book. Lymans is the one I read and one many would recommend. Then you should probably start with a single stage press. RCBS makes a good press. The sell a kit that includes almost everything you will need.

Keep it simple!

Everyone makes "good" presses today but some are more annoying than others. As great as RCBS is their primer catches SUCK!

I personally like the C style presses and currently Lyman wins that contest. Their Ideal press is high quality (but affordable), and has a really well thought yet simple primer catcher that doesn't get in your way. No one tells you about the primer catcher issues but trust me on this rcbs is famous for their's not working!

- balance beam powder scales are the most precise, and all are good!
- case length gauge
- case trimmer

well it sounds like you know what you want to do.

As advised Buy a book or two to start with. Lyman 50th edition loading manual has a section in the front about 150 pages or better on everything you need to know to get started.
Then buy a bullet manufacturer specific manual for the brand you intend to use. and this can wait till a ways down the road.

Highly recommend a single stage press to start. hand priming tool, beam scale and manual powder throw. you'll need a case trimmer too at some point soon. then powder, primer, cases, and bullets.

I started with a Lee hand press, now I have two progressives, two single stages and two shot shell reloaders.

This is a good start. You need to understand 'why' before getting started.

I got one of these Redding T-7 presses and i really like it.

It may be helpful in your 270 load development to adapt a standardized process of finding your accuracy nodes. Here is a post I made that has links that you may find useful.

It will be a really good idea to buy the tool that will help you find the max OAL length of a particular bullet in your gun. IMHO, reloading starts with obtaining this data.

I would buy a Dillon 550, you can use it like a single station press until you become comfortable. Than switch to progressive and have some fun. I also recommend the Lyman load manual and read it cover to cover. You can always get info on line but the book is accurate.

Lyman #50 Reloading Manual and READ it. That will answer 90%+ of your questions.
Single stage press KIT. I suggest the RCBS Rockchucker KIT. You can add on other stuff as you go but will need dies and shell holder. I suggest RCBS also. I do not like lee dies or press. You will also need a trimer at some point. I like the RCBS electric powered one but I do large volumes. I also use the Lyman Case Prep Center for chamfering and deburring case mouths. I suggest RCBS Pump Spray Case Lube. I hate Hornady one-shot. should be called one-stick.

You can get load data off the internet from some bullet manufactures and powder companies. Remember that Hodgdons site also has IMR and Win powders since they are all owned by the same company now.

I have been reloading since the 1960's and have learned a number of tricks to the trade. I have 3 single stage presses and a Dillon 650 and load for about 30 different cartridges. If you are loading for Calif hunting remember the 4 basic rules for non-lead bullets

I actually bought three reloading books. The Hornady manual is my go to.

I would suggest buying at least two so you can see the differences.

Also, don't be intimidated by the size and pages. Most of any manual is recipes.

The actual instruction is pretty easy reading.

For a single state press, nothing beats Forster Co-Ax press. Even for the die sets, Forster dies kick ***.
