.40 S&W

i just picked up my first. .40, a G22. i usually shoot or 9mm or .45 and I wanted to get an idea of what gr people use w/ .40 and why.

it will be for HD. i just want to know what experience you have w/ the current types: 155gr, 165gr, 180gr. i am about to buy in bulk and want to get an idea of what to expect in terms of ballistics.

Grats on the new G22.
I have a Sig Pro 2340 and I've only used 180gr FMJ on it. I like using 180gr because it's the highest grain I can find for a .40 S&W. If your using your pistol for HD puposes consider getting some 180gr HP or JHP.

I like the lighter 155gr or 165gr. Heavier bullets mean more recoil. Hollow points are usually loaded to a higher pressure and the 40SW is a high pressure round already. That means lots of snap in terms of recoil. If I wake up at 3am and have to shoot a bad guy, contending with a bad recoil is not something that will help my odds of survival; even more so if my wife has to use my gun. Ultimately it doesnt matter, just hit your target!

Ignatius Piazza/Front Sight recommends the biggest/heaviest bullet that you can reliable shoot. That being said, ballistics favor the heavier round with a wide hollow nose to allow for expansion....I shoot 180's in my G22 and recoil is managable...Most important is to shoot it...and alot, not just practice rounds, but the ammo that you are going to use for HD....Not cheap, but if you are staking your life on it....priceless....
