Gonna load 38-40 with Universal or Unique

    Hi Guys,

I happen to have a couple powders that will do the trick. I noticed on the hodgdon sight they only list 38-40 under pistol which is fine. 7.5gr of universal shows 955 fps for a 5.5" barrel. With a 22" inch barrel what do you guys think? Maybe I'll be at 1400+? Maybe the bullet hits the max but unless I use a slower burning powder the barrel length sometimes starts slowing the bullet past 16" I've noticed on some articles, depending on the round. Either way that should be fine at 100 yards. Unique and universal are next to each other on the burn rate chart so other than powder density either is probably the same ish.

You don't mention bullet weight .

And search out Steves Reloading Data Pages , they have a few listings.

Typing it in a ballistic calculator it predicts 1278fps with the info you provided. There's a lot of missing information to make this more reliable. But that seems to be reasonable.

Ok cool thanks. That means it will go subsonic before 100 yards =/.

Have you though about 5 grains of Trail Boss?

That probably stays subsonic all the way down so it is probably pretty accurate.

I'm curious about these ballistic calculators being talked about. Are there really apps that can give you estimated velocities just from entering bullet info plus powder types and weights, and barrel lengths? Can they be that smart, or am I just misinterpreting? LOL Not that I'd load ammo strictly by what a phone app or web calculator told me.

                  .

my 20" Winchester 1873 copy in 45 Colt produces 950 fps with a 250 gr bullet and 231 or trail boss for powder.
out of a 1873 5.5" SAA it's 750 fps. fast burning powders don't produce the effect you think in long barrels.

quick load is the only one I know of and it don't work on a phone.

^^ Thanks. Phone app wouldn't be my preference anyway. I'm more of a laptop person. I just watched a video showing how QuickLOAD works. Pretty interesting. Not a Cloud app yet. Probably never will be. A good old fashioned installed app on a PC. The look of it shows very dated tech, but that doesn't mean it doesn't do the job well. Not cheap.

Yip its an actual app to install. It delivers by a carrier and its on a disc. Its a fantastic tool to help load development.
