Loading big bottlenecks on a progressive
Tags: None -
I resize all rifle brass on a single stage press. If I'm loading plinker rounds, I will use the progressive but precision rounds are loaded on the single stage. -
15:1 90% rubbing alcohol or higher concentration to lanolin oil. mix up a quart in a spray bottle.
spray cases thoroughly shake spray again. let alcohol evaporate and give it a go. Also brushing the case necks will help as well.
Better lube and proper application is key to smooth runningComment

What lube are you using.
You need to lube the inside of the neck also.Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.
I really miss the good old Pomona Gun Shows.

Where does it stick? Does it stick just as the handle starts back up, or closer to the top of the stroke (actually the last half or so of the stroke)?
The former means your case is sticking to the walls of the sizing die, indicating insufficient lube on the case exterior.
The latter is your expander ball sticking as it comes back through the neck, indicating insufficient lube on the neck interior.Comment

Get a pile of cotton tipped applicators known to us commoners as Q-tips and lube the inside if the neck with imperial sizing die wax.
I have only ripped caseheads off on the downstroke and the tapered Redding expander always seems to work best.Lynn Dragoman, Jr.

Like the others have said, you probably aren't using enough lube.
Two things about your post that would concern me. First, are those cases close to the end of their useful life? If the heads are coming off it could mean the case head might separate the next time it's fired. Second, how much force are you applying to the ram? Did you use a hammer to unstick it?
I managed to get a stuck case in a single-state press. The only way to get it out of the die was to use a home made tool consisting of some washers, a bolt, and a tap (into the base of the case). I could not get it unstuck using the ram handle.Comment

That's the only way I've been able to unstuck a case. I made a copy of the RCBS stuck case puller only because I have the ability and and didn't have the time to wait for one to show upComment

Are you using the correct shell plate?

The only case lube that I’ve seen consistently get a case stuck was one shot.
I’ve never used it myself but I did have to fix a guys dies twice one the same day. Guess what case lube he was using? One shot.
Sorry good ol lanolin never let me down in 30 years.
Go order some lanolin oil and mix with isopropyl alcohol 2 ounces to the quart.Last edited by kcstott; 11-18-2019, 6:39 PM.Comment

Brass is brand new, press is a loadmaster. Zero issue loading 243 with excellent results (via dual chargemaster). Tried loading a 460 weatherby and abandoned that idea right quick. The case is now 375 ruger.
The decapper does not expand. I expand on station 2 with an M die. No issues there. It happens on sizing down. Either the neck or the base, i cant tell which generates more friction.
I can HOSE the cases and it doesn’t impact sticking or not. Hosed cases are sometimes slick as snot, sometimes stick.
Still happens 1x fired.
kcstott, will lanolin cause priming issues later on? I have a jar of that at home i use as whale oil replacement.Comment

Never had an issue with it. Spray it on and let it dry thoroughly. Lanolin only creeps under extreme heat. I clean all my loaded rounds before they go in the box.
Caution though. Lanolin oil, not the grease. 100% pure.
Dillon sells it as their Dillon case lube. But I’ve been mixing my own for 20 years.Last edited by kcstott; 11-19-2019, 7:04 AM.Comment
