Depends on the brand of primer, brand of case, & how much residue is left.
If you're able to seat new primers to slightly below flush, the pocket is clean enough.

I think we're talking about high powered long distance competition if you are measuring flash holes and deburring them or whatnot. For pistol shooting I think most of this is more work than the results may warrant.
I think most of this is more work than the results may warrant.
Not my decision; if I was thinking I would think there are no reloaders on this forum that has ever heard of a flash hole gage. And then there is that part about reloaders knowing what to do with it.

I have sent two of the gages to collectors/reloaders/shooters or go to experts. I did not ask for anything and I did not get anything for my efforts. I do see a need for the gage, it is not my job to convince anyone it is a very useful tool.

It is a discipline tool, if a reloader choose not to use the tool first and then again after firing using the tool is a wasted effort.

Back when 45ACPs started using small primers I was checking the diameter of the flash holes with the gage. The gage did not touch the flash hole.

After measuring I contacted a friend that was a commercial reloader, he said he did not notice the small primers until it was too late. He changed his policy on purchasing fired cases; he would not purchase cases from a range that did not sort the cases.

I was checking the diameter of the flash holes for a different reason after tumbling, occasionally tumbling media gets stuck in the flash hole.

After being decapped I always give the a quick twirl on the RCBS case prep brush, no fuss and quick.

I just decap and throw in Midway Vibrating cleaner with treated walnut. Let it run and use clean primer pockets as indicator of "done-ness." Rare that media ever sticks in flash hole, and a puff of breath blows it out. Am I missing something?

Do you guys weigh each individual powder charge, and measure every individual cartridge over all length?

I know the rifle bench rest guys do.

I take primer pocket hygiene very seriously and scrub those dirty holes with the appropriate large or small stainless steel push to rid them of any residue.

                Cheers,

Like many others, I am pretty meticulous with brass cleaning. Primer pockets get cleaned, swaged & flash holes cleaned.

Uniform case prep is paramount to low SD. And I am never in any hurry when I’m reloading. I find it a quite enjoyable pastime.

I have loaded well over 60,000 straight wall pistol brass (9MM,.45ACP) never found a need to clean primer pockets.

                        For pistol? Nope and nope.

For bolt rifle, yes (weighing charges, not measuring length.)

For AR ammo (which I rarely shoot anymore), no and no.

I don't even deprime before cleaning. ie; I never clean primer pockets. Too tedious to deprime.

If I could easily decap, then I'd do it. I tried to set up my 550b with a casefeeder and just a universal decapping die, it sort of worked except the decapped rounds would not fall free in the "finished round" stage so it made it annoying and I figured it wasn't really worth it.

Remember to dial 1 before 911.

Forget about stopping power. If you can't hit it, you can't stop it.
