*Update* M1 Garand 30-06 reload question

1) For Hornady's 150 gr fmjbt, don't go by the cannelure. It doesn't match anything, neither .308 nor 30-06. Load by oal and ignore the location of the cannelure.
2) You can't compare 48 grains of X powder to 46 grains of Y powder. You have not specified what powder you are using, nor do you know what powder is in the milsurp round.
3) 43.5 grains sounds extremely light for any powder in 30-06, that sounds more like a .308 loading.Last edited by kcheung2; 10-14-2019, 8:33 PM.---------------------

I’m using H4895. Don’t know what the milsurp is. My biggest concern is the difference in seating depth since both bullets are the same shape and weight
And the cannelure actually sits right on. My concern was the cannelure location between the mil and Hornady bullets and the difference in overall length.
Hornady says 3.185 and that what I’m going by. Starting powder is 43.2grns.
I’m looking more for functionality than accuracyLast edited by jmpgnr24k; 10-14-2019, 8:57 PM.Create a law that says gun control only applies to criminals.Comment

The Hornady book length is correct with that projectile. Any longer and you can see there is not much bullet for the neck to grip.
A good functional load may be closer to the middle, maybe even slightly more. Test at least a full 8 rounds to confirm they load and eject properly.Comment

Cool. Thx guys. I guess my question should’ve been is what I loaded according to Hornady “Safe to shoot?” I’ll answer back with test results when I’m done.
My problem was milsurp rounds were very different from reload info for a rifle that needs non-modern 30-06 loads.
So I wanted to make sure what I was rolling was safe.Last edited by jmpgnr24k; 10-14-2019, 9:55 PM.Create a law that says gun control only applies to criminals.Comment

M2 Ball is a 308 load. This is a Garand load and that means.
150's need not exceed 2800 fps
168's need not exceed 2650 fps
175's Need not exceed 2550 fps
and this is with IMR or H4895 or the equivalent there of. do not exceed published data for the Garand
As you can see these are a very mild 308 load even though they are in a 63mm long caseComment

OP is using H4895 within appropriate amounts, so no need for the modified gas plug in this case.Comment
