I know it's the typical "if it fits it ships" type of barrel test but when using taller or longer projectiles a cartridge can stick out a little more than a regular ball round. I hope this makes sense, but if the base of a cartridge sticks out a little more from the barrel but the slide still goes into full battery you should* be g2g right? I'm also using a no-go and making sure it flush there.

What is the plunk test?
WTB 3rd Gen SW also looking for a 22 pistol with 6" bbl or longerTags: None -
I'm not a gun smith.
If we are talking about a straight wall case, it is supposed head space off the case mouth. Bullet not touching rifling.
If you drop round into chamber and it dose not drop all the way in, case head sticking out of chamber "a little", and then slide goes into batter, it has probably shoved bullet into rifling and or set bullet back into case.
None of these is good. And not gtg.
Dose the round drop back out of chamber? any rifling marks on bullet after it comes out. Measure overall length before and after forced chambering. Dose it get a "little" shorter?
That my two cents. Some one more knowledgeable that I should be along soon.

So are you saying that from what the op described his rounds were just fine and go ahead and shoot them... he's "good to go" ?
He didn't mention sizing lead bullets.
My mistake. As I said " some one more knowledgeable than I should be along soon".

The plunk test is to check if ammo is small enough in DIAMETER to fit freely into the chamber and drop back out without having to be pried out.I know it's the typical "if it fits it ships" type of barrel test but when using taller or longer projectiles a cartridge can stick out a little more than a regular ball round. The plunk test is NOT for headspace or for length.
The "plunk" is the sound that a properly fitting cartridge makes when dropped into a pistol barrel.
Cartridges that are too tight don't make the same sound.
Cartridges that are too tight usually will NOT fall back out when you flip the barrel upside down.Randall Rausch
