45 LC reloading question

I wanted to load some 45 LC using "Hodgdon triple seven" but don't know how much powder I should use. If anyone has some experience with this powder I like to hear.

I will be using a 250 grn LRN shooting it from a Ruger Blackhawk 5 1/2".

isnt 777 a black powder like pyrodex

so you would use like up to 40 grains depending on how much room you need for the bullet to seat

hmm better not load that without a confirmation

further research yielded me that 777 should not be used in cartridges and if you are going to use it against the reccomended use you need to load a compressed load

Yes it is a replacement black powder like pyrodex. I was told it is more powerful then black powder so I wanted to find out how much I should use.

I shoot black powder

#1 please disregard what everyone else wrote


Ok 777 burns 15% hotter and stronger than Black Powder so here is the load Recipe.

using a black powder measure ONLY as Black powder is done by volume not weight.

clean, deprime, size the brass, then prime as normal

pour in 25 grains of 777 then use a fiber wad on top. Compress the wad to the powder SEMI Firm pressure. then measure 20 grains of oatmeal pour in. Now press the bullet down to meet with the oatmeal firmly

Done presto


More tips. when using real black powder you need to handle with care. Do not use any plastic or steel. pour the black powder into a black powder flask. Then use a black powder measure. As they are usually made of either copper or brass and will reduce your risk of static electricity. I use the flask and pour into the measure then pour straight into the case. Cleaners. black powder and subs get a little messy. they are easy to clean up but they are messy. I usually take a an old windex bottle with me. Pour a small amount of simple green and fill the rest up with water. Once you gun starts fouling spray it down and you can let it run off. The fouling comes off easy like this

For black powder depending on what kind of load i want and bullet i measure 35 grains of 3fff pour in. fiber wad on top then press the bullet to meet the powder. if i want a mild load then u can use 20 or even 25 grains. Fiber wad on top fill almost to top with oatmeal (as the oatmeal will compress) then press in a bullet.

GALLERY PLINKIN CHEAP LOADS

Gallery loads are so cool and cheap to shoot.

load up 10 grains of black. Fiber wad oatmeal all the way up to the top. Then take a .452 roundball and press 1/2 way in. No need for crimp. this will give you a cheap in expensive plinking load.

Almost forgot Lubing

Bullets lubed for smokeless powder are a no go for black powder and subs. They will foul your gun quick. If you already lubed your bullets then you need to remove the lube. boil some water then drop the bullets in the water until the lube comes off. Then take them out. you will need a black powder lube. Most recomended powder is spg. Black powder uses a natural lube. However you can make up a lube yourself using Beeswax and crisco. melt down 3 parts beeswax to 1 part crisco then let it cool down and harden up. Then your done. lube part that is.

Thank you Scrat this will help a lot. I plan on loading a couple test rounds and take them to the range next time I go. My coworker is a cowboy shooter he told me the same for the 777 but did not mention the fiber wad. He said powder then the oatmeal compress with bullet. Is the fiber wad really necessary?

Hell ya. If you dont have any check out cabelas they sell a bag of 1000 of them pretty cheap. some guys dont use the fiber wad. But then you risk the chance of getting the oatmeal mixed with the black powder. Does it happen. Well its one of those things being it can. how will you know you may not if you are shooting cas just shooting steel. But if you are shooting for accuracy and need to be precise you may notice a difference.

Oh also do not listen or learn from people who shoot and load regular loads. it is different. Now i have shot regular loads from by black powder revolvers. You can do it if you are going to shoot mild loads. however you have to remember the black powder gun is designed to shoot black powder loads that are using black powder and black powder lube. You can get some serious leading by switching around or not using a good black powder lube. Now when ever im in doubt i treat it like a cap and ball. Meaning i load up the cylinders then in front of the bullets i take a small amount of bore butter and put it around each bullet.
