How critical is bullet seating depth? 38spl - Updated

I use a Redding taper crimp die on .38 lead or plated bullets, roll crimp on jacketed .357 loads.
I’ve never had a setback issue.

The OP is loading 38 Special. Not a magnum for target bullseye shooting. I use standard dies and plated bullets all the time. I don't find such a need to worry about the exact crimp or OAL in 38 Special. My accuracy is more dependent on how I am shooting that day. Not on the reloads. Yes to all of the points of tuning the powder, bullet, crimp to the gun. But casual shooting does not demand such attention. This isn't long range accuracy or reloading here.
