Going to make some powder puff loads for the family.

Does the new L-n-L measure have small and large pistons? If the large piston is used it may not be consistent at very low charges (<3gr) regardless of powder used.

        38spl,
and yes, large and small , will be using the small pistons.
I Will probably cut down a 38 case as a dipper if it doesnt meter

The small piston will have no problem metering smaller amounts. On the progressive press, I don't think you will have a problem. My Hornady powder meter works fine with low volume loads.

I had inconsistent powder drops with my LNL using the small drum and TrailBoss, as well as American Select, both flaky, fluffy powders. I use a Redding 10x now, or RCBS Charge Master now for both, they both work great.
            YMMV, try it...

Considering that the reduced recoil loads (low pressure) with TrailBoss in 38spl are probably (I think) around 3gr +/- 10%, a little inconsistency is not a big deal.

38 spcl and trailboss was one of my fav loads. accurate shooting and soft recoil. I've loaded more that I will ever need in 38 spcl. here is what learned.

                1) it will bridge and you will have squibs. many of them.
                2) hornady knows that and they have told me to handle my press roughly on the stroke to help with the bridge.

                3) you have but one option when reloading this combination (trailboss/38 spcl). you have to put eyes on every round for powder check

if you can be disciplined in doing so, you will be rewarded with a great soft shooting round.

Good tip to pass on about the rough handling to shake loose the powder.

Even with "eye's on" every load to ensure powder is there, did you still have squibs? At minimum load (<3gr) under recoil powder moves forward towards the projectile and away from the primer.

No. That powder location in the brass is is a myth if u put eyes on every round...no squibs

I agree with the squib is probably an "empty" case on the progressive which is fairly high and will require "eyes on". As to position causing the squib, if it is a myth, it is being repeated by the powder manufacturers themselves. Perhaps it occurs in specific situations and created a myth:

"If the round is already under-pressured by design, it has now been subjected to an orientation that further reduces pressure. Muzzle velocity may drop to zero, as the bullet fails to emerge from the barrel."

It is probably better to use the middle range of the reduced recoil loads since they are way low on the pressure.

For 38 special and Trailboss, I made a dipper with a 9mm case and soldered a wire handle to it. With a loading tray and funnel its pretty fast. I'm making cheap, soft practice ammo so +- a tenth doesn't matter. I would have to check my notes but I think I was using 3.5 or 4 grains under a 148 grain wad cutter and they shoot like a .22

I wouldn't say it's a myth, but it likely does not apply to fast burning powders in pistol applications (i.e. smallish cases.)

Slower powders with low case fill ratios using large rifle cases may see this issue.

Lets be real. The OP is talking trail boss in a 38 spcl. Position dont matter.

Not a single pistol load that im aware of that position matters if u stay within the load specs.

Riffles...not sure which specif riffle round you are reaponding to.
