storing ammo?

Been buying so much ammo..I am running out of places to put it?
I know humidity is a problem..as far as storage goes.

But what about heat?

If I put it in the garage in another safe will it be ok?

It gets pretty warm in there in the summer?

My favorite line someone else said to a response of the exact same question was, "How hot do you think it gets in Iraq?" First you shouldnt put it in a safe second just search the answer is out there.

Keep it as cool and dry as you can and it will outlast you.
Use sealing containers and dessicant.
And there's no reason not to put it in the safe, if you've got room in there.

From all the other threads people report that it is a huge fire/explosion harzard to store ammo and the like is a sealed enclosure. If the ammo were to cook off the safe would compound the blast. Firecracker open palm no big deal, Firecracker closed fist and you will be giving your wife one handed massages.

Modern fixed ammunition is not an explosion or fire risk. Moisture can cause corrosion of the cases, and make it unsafe to shoot because the case could rupture.

If enough external heat is applied, it will start to cook off, but we're talking a long, hot fire, as in the building burning down.

I keep my ammo under lock and key for safety reasons. If it gets hot enough to cook it off, the building has already burned down. I don't have a huge amount, though.

with the mini-heat wave we've been having up here in norcal, i just moved my powder and primers to the safe below ground level where its nice and cool. bad thing is now i'm almost outta space in the safe

Something to think about is bug infestation. So storing it in some kind of sealed container is likely a good idea. I had a mini-infestation of termites last year. They came up between the concrete slab and the concrete foundation and made a beeline, for whatever reason into my wooden primer cabinet. They squeezed through the particle board backing and ate into the packaging. The cabinet was untouched. They ate the packaging of mostly shotshell primers but also got into some Federal Large rifle primers. Their moist bodies and likely secretions rusted the shotshell primers (they contain steel) and corroded and made an icky mess of my Federal LR primers. I think I tossed between 3 and 4 thousand primers before I discovered their invasion (can we say expensive mistake?). They ate all of the paper fiber around the primers. It was truly odd. I have since moved my storage away from an invasion route and contain them in a sealed container.

Like someone else said, if the fire is hot enough to ignite them, well, your house or place of storage is already a complete loss. Terminix cost me a pretty penny for an inspection and resultant termination of their colony. There was no structural damage to the house, they just wanted some cellulose.. and the primer packaging was apparently tasty.
