New Powder Application Guide at AmmoGuide

Some visitors have told us they wonder how we keep thinking of new ways to improve AmmoGuide. It's no secret - we just listen to our members. A few weeks ago, we heard from subscriber 'nrausmc'. He had run into an excellent deal on an unfamiliar powder, but had no way to determine if he could actually USE that powder in any of his guns. And with ammo and reloading components as scarce as they are right now, he didn't want to pass up any good deal. He described the basic function he needed: "Please let me lookup what a given powder is used for."

We were pretty sure that 'nrausmc' was onto something when, almost simultaneously, these 2 requests appeared on the AmmoGuide forum:

• I have a large can of Hercules SR 2400. Can anyone tell me what I use this in for reloading? (see AmmoGuide forum thread "Dupont SR 2400?")
• I am holding a 4 pound can of Dupont SR-4756. What can I use this for other than a bunch of firecrackers? (see AmmoGuide forum thread "Dupont SR-4756")

Today, we have provided the tool that will help 'nrausmc' and many more reloaders - the new Powder Application Guide. Perhaps the easiest-to-use AmmoGuide tool yet, simply select the powder and AmmoGuide will list all of the rounds on the website that use that propellant! Do you know another website or program that does that? (FORGET paper manuals)

We can think of other times this tool will come in handy. Perhaps you want to subscribe to AmmoGuide, but aren't sure if it has loads using the powders you have on hand? FREE members can't access AmmoGuide load data, so this couldn't be determined before. Now free members can tell and make a better-informed choice about subscribing.

To locate and list those rounds using the powder you have selected, the Powder Application Guide must scan all 19,000+ loads in the AmmoGuide database. I'm particularly proud that I figured out how to accomplish this complex task almost instantaneously! THIS TOOL IS F-A-S-T!

Quickload does a really good job of suggesting powder choices based on cartridge and desired pressure/velocity with a specific bullet weight and barrel length.

Thanks for the opportunity to contrast the products because Quikload doesn't do what AmmoGuide does. What it does it seems to do well (predict internal ballistics), it's just not that much. This review from 6mmbr.com

...QuickLOAD has limitations. It is merely a computer simulation. It doesn't account for different brands of primers for example, and its ability to predict the effect of seating bullets into the rifling is crude. You most certainly should not just "plug in" a bullet and powder and use that load, assuming it is safe...

...WARNING: QuickLOAD is a computer simulation of centerfire cartridge performance. YOU MUST NEVER just "plug in the numbers" and use QuickLOAD's output for a load recipe. That is foolish and dangerous. There are many reasons why the data QuickLOAD generates may not be safe in YOUR gun. Before loading live ammunition, you should always check with the powder-makers' most recent load data...

Quikload is a useful but limited program. No "virtual cartridge collection" (like AmmoGuide) means: no Ballistic Comparison, no Visual Comparison, no "Identification and Search" on cartridge dimensions, no Rebarrel/reChambering Guide, no Reloading Cost calculator, no forum, etc, etc, etc. And DEFINTELY No Powder Application Guide. And which powders does it cover? (we just added Somchem powders - from South America.) How much does it cost? (For full access, AmmoGuide is $18.95) Being a standalone program (not a website), with Quikload you can't share links or personal messages with other Quikload customers. With no forum, you can't ask questions or tell tall stories (THERE'S NO COMMUNITY, the thing we love here), etc. I've never seen anyone from Quikload (staff or owner) post on calguns, either, or ANY forum come to think of it.

And speaking of Calguns and RKBA (if that's important to you), does Quikload do anything to help protect our rights? AmmoGuide is in California and heavily involved - created http://calnra.com/legs.shtml, maintains it free for NRA, provides internal communications for the NRA Members' Councils, owner (me) is president of a Members' Council, etc etc etc. I mean, I hate talking about myself ;-) but check out the "2008 Volunteer of the Year" award link in the sig.

Don't get me wrong, Quikload is nice software, just doesn't compare to AmmoGuide. Nothing does.
