    Any tips on reloading 7.62x39?

Friend gave me a set of Lee dies and a few hundred pieces of once fired brass.

Any good sources for cheap projectiles and can I use .308 as a substitute?

I tried 150 grain Hornady .308 in my Mini, and they shot "minute of broad side of a barn."
    Not recommended.

You can't load 7.62x39 for less then you can buy steel cases ammo.
Now if you enjoy reloading it will cost.
Operavoice is correct you can hit the broad side of a bar from the inside with .308 in x39
I used to reload so I could shoot more, now I shoot more so I can reload more.

Swage your bore and get projectiles that fit.

I have heard that in many x39 guns you need 310, 311 or 312 projectiles to get decent groups. Most x39 ammo is larger diameter than strict 308.

Take a look at the folks powder coating lead bullets....

You can crank the velocity up to 2700-2900 and have no leading issues.

If you want accuracy, you need to slug the barrel and buy projectiles of the correct size

As most of the AK/ SKS shooters started with the platform as Ammo was cheap.... so many people still want cheap Ammo- that’s the steel cased stuff

The PMC brass cased stuff was awesome but could not compete.
One company tried making Match 5.45 x 39 but no one wanted to pay $2.50/ round.

Once you know your bore diameter, it’s a matter of searching for the best / bulk projectiles or a mold to cast your own.
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT
          (thanks to Jeff Cooper)

I'm in a similar boat. I like hunting with the 762x39 round but now I have to be 100% lead free. So I found Fiocchi makes brass with box primers. I just need to find the correct replacement bullet.

H4198 and .310 hornady bullets. My American ranch likes the Sierra .311s.

Works for me. GECO brass, WLR primers, 26.0 gr H4198, COAL 2.205", and I get 5-shot groups less than 1.5 MOA. At 300 yds, using a 4x prism sight. Chrono'd at 2350, 10' from muzzle.

Tip: I use the 0.308 expander.

AA1680 was made for the 7.62X39 by the manufacture. and works very well. I use 123 gr .310 bulk midway bullets I bought long ago and some Hornady ones also.
I have not worked up a non-lead load since I do not hunt with mine.

A1680 as well as CFE Black and Lt30 have all worked for me using the Hornady 123 grain .310's

RL7 and Hornady .310 123 grain bullets worked great in my Yugo 59/66.
