I've found factory jacketed bullets within maybe 2/10ths of a grain. I was actually surprised at how close they are. Lead, especially home-cast lead bullets have a far greater variance. Like you said, for short distance handgun use it isn't an issue.Comment

I reload my SD ammo and primarily use Hornady XTPs. I see variations of 1 grain at times and separate by weight for that reason. I'm a bit anal when it comes to my SD ammo so I will test exactly what I'm going to carry, down to the exact bullet weight, case length and head-stamp.Comment

I weighed some pulled projectiles from surplus 7.62x54R ammo, they were nominally 150 grains but they varied by as much as 6 grains. Most were in the 148-152 range, but even within that 4 grain range there was no clear mode.---------------------

I must be anal and have too much time on my hand. I separate all of my handgun bullets by weight. When I first did this, I found MBC .38s and .45s varied from 1 gn under to 2 grains over the stated weight and an occasional on 3-4 gns over. I wrote to MBC which responded that their QC goal is +/- 10%. So they made their goal.
I found Berry's the most consistent. Bayou was a close second. Meister were about the same as MBC, but I now have a strong preference for coated or plated.
For rifle, Hornady match .223s were on the money. Bulk Hornady from Midway are generally +/- 1 gn.Comment

With all kidding aside, I've showed more than one person the difference in accuracy using plated cartridges they assembled vs average
cast bullet cartridges that I assembled, using their gun, at the 7 yard line.
They didn't accept the facts very well when a junker Model 64 fixed sight former CDC 4 inch revolver prints a tight clover
leaf pattern when compared to a six inch $1,400 S&W performance center's group that needs something bigger than a 50 cent piece to cover up.Last edited by hambam105; 05-12-2019, 11:26 PM.Comment
