    Wolf primers question

Well, I'm out of CCI small rifle primers and ready to open the first brick of Wolf primers.
The boxes are marked as "small rifle-.223".
Are these the same as the "small rifle magnum" and suitable for semi-auto appl. ???

open the brick and look at a single pack, It should say small rifle magnum on front and they are fine for semi-auto as they have a thicker cup

I think I read somewhere else (maybe Arfcom) that you should be fine with the .223's. Should be the same as the Magnums, even then I wouldn't worry about it too much as I've also read that the "use magnums in autoloaders" is a bit of hooey and lots of people use regular SR primers in their AR.

So there's my 0.02 of hearsay and conjecture I'm waiting on my Wideners order to get my primers.

I used both type of Wolf SR and LR in my semi-auto rifle. Can't tell the difference! Although Magnum is supposed to have a thicker primer cup.

From what I have read the .223 labeled ones are the same as the magnum ones.

              You are mistaken.

The magnum primers will say MAGNUM on the box.
The Wolf magnum primers are silver colored and the non-magnum are copper colored. As previously stated, the magnums have thicker cups for use in autoloaders.

FWIW, I have used about 8k of the non-magnum primers in AR15s with no detrimental effects experienced so you should be fine.

I believe they're the same, except for the plating. I think the .223 ones are have since been relabeled as the magnums because of the confusion caused by the labeling......at least that is what I recall in the arfcom thread.......but then again my memory sucks!!! I bought a bunch of the regular small rifle primers from Wolf too and will be using them for the AR15 too. I have read they work fine, but always glad to hear more people saying so.

I use nothing but the Wolf SR primers in my OLL AR Service Rifle for HP competition.. they are great! I did notice a 50fps increase in my velocity with my 20" barrel.. but in my 26" SpaceGun and 24" Varmint rig there was no velocity increase.

I have not been able to locate any wolf SR magnum or 223 primers but I can tell you that the standard wolf SR primers have a non plated copper cup. They work great in low pressure rounds like the .30 Carbine but at least two people have told me they experienced pierced primers when using them in the .223 Remington
