Small Rifle Primer Question

Have the opportunity to purchase locally either Federal 205 or Winchester WSR Small Rifle Primers for $20/1000 - new, not old stock. Would be used for a Rem 700 Varmint 223 and possibly my AR's. Are these decent primers for my intended use or should I pass on them?

For my needs ,I like Rem7 1/2 and wolf magnum.I run at or above published max loads and the primers I use have a stronger primer cup.
To answer the question ,the primers you are or would be using are good ,as long as your not using max loads.

If you are using ball powders I would stick to magnum primers... A soft regular primer (Federal) to me goes to the bolt action only stick powders .. Why not use mag primers for whatever in 223 reloads ?? Only one primer to stock for both types of powder or gun reloads...

Modern primers should last a long, long time. I'd ask how they were stored and if you believe the answer. I've never had issues with primers bought from old stock, yet.

Price aside, are 205s not recommended for ar's? I though Winchesters were the soft ones.

Most recommended primers for AR's have a .025" cup thickness such as RP 7 1/2, CCI 450, CCI 41 and others. Federal says there primers are ok but the FED 205 has a cup thickness of .0225" and Win SR is .021". Federal primers are said to be softer than others? Lot's of people report using CCI 400 primers which are not recommended for AR's and only have a cup thickness of .020". I would just go with a thicker cupped primer for bolt action or AR's.

The only primer I'd shy away from and is specifically not reccomended in 223 would be Remington 6 1/2 primers.

I currently have about 12# of H335 and 6-8# of BL-C2. Initially want to load up some 40gr V-MAX for the 700 for a planned Norcal squirrel shoot the first week of June.

I would buy mag primers especially for those powders and win748. All I use is mag primers anymore with excellent results.
