    Bullet / case Cannelure tooling...

Does anyone know of a good bullet cannelure tool? If so, have you used one?

The tool would be used for bullets or cases.

Here is an explanation of the picture above...

    Thanks in advance.

I'm not aware of any tool that engraves a cannelure on bullets. Maybe someone who casts their own projectiles knows of one.

But now that you have my attention, why bother unless you're casting your own and even then, why bother?

I want to start swagging my own bullets a including jackets. A cannelure on the bullet helps with crimp in the case.

On the case, it can prevent setback or for identification.

Can someone provide information on the military .38 Special on the left with its blunt nose full metal jacket bullet and knurled case cannelure? The headstamp is W C C 6 0. The one on the right has the standard bullet profile and is headstamped R A 6 2. Thanks.

In hunting bullets with soft points, it can help control expansion and loss of the jacket.

CH and Corbin both make them. I've never used one.

Heavy recoiling revolvers and lever action rifles benefit from cannelured bullets crimped in place. That is why jacketed bullets for those type firearms have cannelures.

Check Ebay they come up once every few weeks. I have a Corbin that was very cheap in cost.

I have a cannelure tool, I have had it for over 20 years. It works and then there is that thing about needing it. Many years ago Lyman said crimping can be a bad habit. There are not many reloaders that understand what Lyman was talking about; it is possible to reduce bullet hold while applying a crimp. That is almost like repeating myself because reloaders do not understand 'bullet hold'.

And then there is that art about crimping; crimping only requires a hint of effort.

I just picked up a cannelure tool. First bullet to try was a 40 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip.

Top bullet was a stock 40 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip, bottom one is the same bullet, but with a cannelure I put on there.

Just testing the new tool. Not bad.

It appears to have raised the surface instead of indenting it, seems backwards to me.

Nope. If you look at the area that is a dull color around the band, that it is where the bullet is rolling on the rollers. The cannelure is getting pushed into the bullet.

I need to mount it to a bench to do a full cannelure. This picture was just 10 seconds of doing it in my hand. Just needs to go deeper with more pressure / leverage. The tool is very nice. I tested some brass too. Works much easier with brass cases by hand. Will find it a permanent home on reloading bench this weekend.

Please test the accuracy before the cannelure, and after.

I will do a test on these. I have shot other factory cannelured bullets and non-cannelured bullets. Most of the time I shoot cannelured bullets.

The Lapua bullets I have shot that have cannelures were the most accurate I have ever shot. They are just crazy expensive. Kind of why I wanted to do my own.

I see your point. I just don't think I see the benefit.
