so i have 500 rounds of 55gr 223 tula (it was a stupid purchase because i can't shoot it at any of my local ranges) and i was wondering if anybody has ever tried replacing the bullet with a normal 55gr lead bullet? I saw another thread someone on the internet of someone doing this but they were replacing the powder and bullet. I am just wondering about replacing the bullet.

Just put 'em up for sale in the Ammo Forum. My range has no lead restrictions so far...sigpic

My guess is you would have to resize the case after you pull the bullet because you would lose the proper neck tension..
Doable? Yeah

We used to pull the bullets from GI ammo and seat Sierra Matchkings in them, it was called "Mexican match".
Pull the bullets, pour all the powder out, weigh it, then figure out the average.
Neck size the cases (without the decapping pin in the die), add the average amount of powder and seat the new bullets.Frank

So after you reloaded all the ammo how much powder did you have left over?

YES, I have done so. With several hundred rounds of 5.56 tracer ammo I got in a trade among a big lot.so i have 500 rounds of 55gr 223 tula (it was a stupid purchase because i can't shoot it at any of my local ranges) and i was wondering if anybody has ever tried replacing the bullet with a normal 55gr lead bullet? Using my RCBS collet puller. I pulled the bullets, placed the bulletless cases into loading blocks.
Dump powder into pan for scale, for easy pouring, one at a time.
Necksize with stem retracted so as to not deprime.
Recharge the case.
Place in loading block. Once all were sized/charged. Then seated bullets of same grain weight.
Sounds more complicated than it actually was.Comment

Did you ever have reliability issues?

Good thing it's a guess because it's wrong.
Ever hear of Mexican match?
They literally take ball ammo, pull the bullets and re-seat match bullets right over the existing charge.
The case neck will hold a bullet just fine after having a prior bullet pulled from the case.Randall Rausch
