marking brass more permanently than with a sharpie

I want to mark cases with the case weight for a study, and I want the mark to last from the loading bench, to the field, firing, and back to the loading bench.

surviving tumbling is not needed, either way. Just needs to survive loose transport and firing in a gun.

    Sharpie will NOT cut it.

Any ideas? Can't scratch the brass.

I've never tried it but perhaps a paint pen?

Not a recommendation but what's wrong with a sharpie? I mark all my rounds because I want my brass to be easily identified by my fellow competitors so they do not take my brass that I toiled so hard to prepare. I use a sharpie and it lasts through loading, shooting and back to the bench again. Sometimes it will last through tumbling and another round of shooting.

Nail polish has a tendency to work into the headstamp so it might last longer. At least in the recessed areas. Sharpie works really well for me though.

How about trying a brass-blackening agent or something like liver of sulfur? You'd need some way to apply it tho..

A guy I shot next to at a match used to paint the bottom/case heads with a bright colored paint. It made identifying his brass extremely easy. I asked him how he painted them and he said that he put them in a case that held the rounds tip down and then he ran a paint roller over them. Makes me wonder what his bolt face looked like because I would think it would be packed with paint but I didn't ask. Dude shot a pretty good score so he must have know what he was doing.

                Sort them into baggies.
Collect each case as you fire them and return them to baggies.

to mark the case weight on each case .
                  maybe a engraver.

Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.

How close are the weights going to be ?

sort them , mark with nail polish pens , they have some with very fine tips for doing art work on nails . different colors for different weight class .

I use them for marking/sealing primers so I know which are mine . use different colors for small rifle/small pistol or large rifle/small rifle when load testing.

                    just a thought .

Won’t that change the case weight that you just engraved on the case?

Engrave a unique number on each one's case head and then weigh each one. You can also use liquid to measure each one's case capacity and keep a detailed log of each firing, load data, changes in case weight, etc.
