CA anti-gun laws and reloading

I've been considering getting into reloading but live in California. I just don't want to regret plunking down a few hundred bucks for equipment & supplies & then have another unconstitutional law hit the books, directed at reloaders.

The only other thing stopping me is my wife thinks I'd blow up the house & doesn't want me doing it.

Anyone else on the fence as I am?

Do not do it. Certainly do not start and then stockpile supplies.
That make less out there for the rest of us---many who have been doing it for many years

Lol. “ a couple hundred”. You will spend more than a couple hundred on components. An 8 keg of powder is anywhere between 130 and 210. Try a couple k. It’s very addictive.

It's hard to blow up your house or (slightly more likely) set it on fire while reloading. I had my doubts when I started but as the fellow who gave me his press and a few other pieces pointed out, he'd been doing it since he was 12 with no mishaps.

As far as the law, anything is possible but I can't see them outlawing reloading and I can't see them seizing components and finished ammunition unless the owner is threatening people or otherwise acting irresponsibly, in which case LE will also seize weapons.

The focus of the antigunners is already turning towards reloaders.

I just read an article that was panicking over the ability of private citizens to make their own "cop killer bullets" at home, in private, with no government approval or oversight whatsoever!

They were beside themselves that this would be allowed in today's Soviet America.

We are safe for the near future, but with Dems running the show in Sacramento who knows what they will cook up next.

Thanks for the replies. I have a list of all equipment and tools for my custom kit to get started with 9mm and that is all just under $300 (turret press). Midway seems to have good prices. Then I need to get brass, primers and powder. Oh, and a tumbler.I think my IT and tennis (yes, tennis) skills will allow me to quickly get things down. I have built many computers over the years and also have been stringing racquets for 25+ years. There is quite a bit of physics involved with racquets, string types, tension, and the type of machine being used, not to mention other areas. I enjoy stringing my own racquets and saving $20 every time I string one. I am sure I can do reloading. Now, what do I tell my wife when she asks what that contraption is mounted to my table?!?!

Soon, if you rely on store-bought ammo in CA, you will be SOL. Reloading is the only way to go if you shoot any more than a casual amount.

Just wait until 7/1/19... you will learn quickly why reloading is the answer.

It isn’t hard, and you sound like you have ample qualifications. Just read, read read, go slow and pay attention, and you’ll soon be up to speed.

Those of us that have escaped the dictatorship of Calif. don't have these issues to worry about or have to deal with. What happens to me is I see and buy something I think might be good to shoot I'm referring to loaded ammo. Then I don't get around to shooting it for some time and then I do try it and it's seriously good stuff well my luck is when I go back to get more the damn company "discontinued" it, chit. Get stuff and try it, don't do what I do don't drag your heels.

When my wife whines about how much I spend on reloading and guns, I always reminder her "I could be in a bar chasing women, take your choice!"

That shuts her up pretty quick.

Some people call this an expensive hobby, I don't, it is relatively cheap. I know guys that have 30-40 K or more in a Harley or 100-200 K in a Hot Rod or Classic Car. Then you look at what some guys spend on Boats and Planes.

When I look back at what I spent on my T-Bucket, I cringe!

I consider our hobby on the very cheap side.

Regarding blowing up your house, if you keep the powder in a dry cool place, there is next to zero danger. I have cans of powder that I bought 20-30 years ago. Still good.

Modern smokeless gunpowder is not like black powder. You would make news world wide if you blew up your house reloading, it just doesn’t happen. Smokeless powder is by design can’t ignite by a simple spark or a match. Also, If this powder gets wet it’s useless.

If traditional Black powder gets wet it is also useless. But it becomes very unstable and extremely dangerous when it dries out. Modern BLACK powder is safer but it can flash and cause serious burns.

Get some very good automated equipment! Spend $1200-1500 and do it right. A rockchucker is okay to work up loads, but repeatedly making 100 rounds will send you to the physical therapist for repetative stress injuries.
