I take it you do not have a trimmer?
I would work but better to trim.
If you do not have a trimmer you can bring the brass down to me and trim it on my unit.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

Actually I have a Giraud, but I am loading 1k rounds for plinking. I was just hoping I could get 1 use before having to trim.

I trim my brass from gas guns to 2.005". I do not want any issue when I rapid fire in a match.

I keep brass from bolt guns as is and just neck size. I occasionally measure OAL and trim when I need to after 2 - 3 fires.

If your processed brass fits in the chamber, I do not see a problem with longer brass.

          Try the plunk test .
          If it fits / seats O K - RELOAD THEM .
temperature changes OAL and what the book says is for the rifle they
          tested had .
We had a bunch of M T's in an ammo can [ metal ] in back of truck
and nephews were in a hurry - one was checking OAL and other
          Depriming / sizing .
Ones needing trimming in one ammo can and O K ones in another .
Anyway , wrong can was deprimed and O K . So let them reach room
Temperature and deprime / size - then check .
I have told them why I deprime / size , then clean . each stage the OAL
          changes by temperature .

SAMMI spec on .308 brass is min 2.005 and max 2.015. Your book is saying that at 2.016, you need to trim.

It really depends on your chamber of you need to trim or not, but 2.040 is long. The only way to find out at what point you need to trim is to measure your chamber. Take a piece of brass and cut the top half of the neck off. Seat a bullet into the case. Then put the top half ring on the bullet and use your press to seat the ring into the bullet, leaving it very long. Now slowly chamber the round. The chamber will push the ring down, giving you your chambers OAL.
