    Primer question

What hangun calibers would use small pistol primers, and what ones use large primers? Or to make it easier, is there a cut off where it goes from small to large?

Also, what kind of primers would 7mm Remington Mag take? Large rifle, or large rifle magnum?

    thanks

Up to and including .40 S&W use small pistol primers (10MM you might say is the start of large pistol), however, the new .45 GAP cartridge is an exception in that it uses small pistol primers.

I'm not big into reloading rifle calibers, but I'm sure others will chime in.

7mm Remington Mag takes LR - like Remington 9 1/2's.

It's a common misconception that 'Mag' calibers always take mag primers. Some mag calibers do not use mag primers and some non-mag calibers, such as the 416 Rigby, always uses mag primers

Lyman's 49th Edition is recommended reading. The Reloading Store at the Angeles shooting range has it cheaper than Amazon.

      7mm Remington Mag can take 9 1/2 Mag Remington primers - I <think> it is OK for 9 1/2 non-mag also.

Check ballistics data for the different primers - for instance - CCI #34 will result in higher muzzle velocities, etc. for the same load as compared to other primers.

I've run across some 45 acp brass that takes small pistol primer. It is uncommon but not unheard of.

Blazer uses small pistol primers on their aluminum .45acp cases... gd knows why though

I have heard that .45acp from the win clean line also are small primer but still havent seen 'em in person

there is also that .450smc cartridge that some guy was talking about a few weeks ago... those are small rifle primers in a case that externally looks like a .45acp
