Okay, I have a quick question on seating projectiles for the
Mosin 7.62X54R round. I am somewhat new to reloading,
I started at the first of this year, so I still have a lot to learn.
I should say, first off, that I am fairly recoil adverse, so I have
been reloading for my Westinghouse Mosin to this recipe;
PPU new brass, (now once fired).
CCI #34 primers
TiteGroup 10.5 grains
Pulled 147-159 grain projectiles.
COAL 2.85" with these pulled projectiles.
The powder charge I have worked up based on accuracy.
This gets me about a 2 inch spread. Needs more tuning.
I just received some Speer .311 SP 150 grain projectiles,
they are labeled "Hot-Cor" ... (hubba, hubba).
They are just beautiful to look at, I'm hoping they will come
out with a calendar featuring these bare projectiles!
Finally, here is the question. When seating the old rooski
pulls, everything seemed fine with my above parameters.
BUT, these new projectiles only seat down into the brass
a mere 1.50"! Better put, only 1/4 inch into the brass!
This goes against what I understand as the
rule-of-thumb seating depth, that being at least 1/3 of the
projectile length.
What say you?
