    Halted Reloading Plans

I was going to load some target 45 ammo.

    Step 1 decap...doh!

Amazon can get me replacements on Sunday.

Is that a universal? Or the pin off the resizer?
Imho use a separate decapper and get a stash of pins.
I've broken enough pins on my resize dies. Get expensive not to mention time waiting for replacements.

I agree. Also might want to go a little easier on the press handle. I decap a lot of crimped .223 and what work for me is to raise the ram until it makes contact and then apply pressure. If I have to apply too much pressure, then either the case is misaligned or the primer is just not coming out. I probably decapped 10k rounds before breaking my first pin.

Always buy the heavy duty decapping pins
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT
        (thanks to Jeff Cooper)

As others mentioned, I went with a universal deprime die and then bought a boat load of replacement pins. I think I've got 9 in my pile.

Some items are considered wear items and should have backups.

I thought I mentioned, this is from the Lee universal decamping die.

I've been pretty good about not breaking the pin. I think I've deprimed less than 1,000 shells.

I just need to have back up pins.

            I usually:
            1. Deprime
            2. Clean
            3. Sort
            4. Load.

I got the universal deprimer so I wouldn't kill my Dillon dies.

Is that from a lee? Bend it back. I've been able to do that many times. Stick the end in the side of a vise and go slow. Get it as straight as you can. A good gun shop(I know, few and far between in CA anymore) carries replacements. If you have a Sportsmans Warehouse around you they are the best I have seen in CA. Unfortunately you'll be in Black Friday foot traffic.

I got some generics Heavy-Duty pins one time, and they wouldn't even fit through the flash-hole of .25ACP... returned them, and got some OEM OG pins.

So don't you still have the decapper in your Dillon die?

Bicycle spokes make excellent replacement pins, if the pins are the replaceable type.

The Squirrel Daddy hardened pins are supposed to be great, but they seem to only sell them in a three pack anymore.
If they're great, why three? A little pricey for that three pack IMO, but will keep you in business I suppose.

Squirrel Daddy Decapping pin are offered in hardened steel or standard high grade USA melt steel. Replacement pins fit Lee Dies and are offered in high grade steel or heat treated steel either expanding or straight side decapping pins.

I've reloaded 10 of thousands of rounds in 9mm, 40, and 45 with Dillon resizing dies and have only bent 1 pin. I would say conservatively I've done 40 thousand 9mm on my 1050. Seriously who has time to decap separately on pistol rounds........

Bottom line is does happen have a few pins on hand. Replace and move on to the next case...

On a side note the Dillon pins are really easy to replace. It took longer to find the replacement than it did to replace it. All dies come with on replacement, so I have a few spares.
If you want change you have to put in your 2 cents, you can't just sit on the sidelines and whine.

I still have/use the decapper for sizing.

I clean the brass after decapping.

So, what's the standard procedure on cleaning pistol brass? Decap before or after cleanings?

                            (I have a Dillon 550.)

Depends on how you choose to reload. Some guys don't care about a clean primer pocket. Personally I decap all brass before tumbling. I have a Dillon 650 with a Lee decapper and it goes quick, faster than the casefeeder can feed. I also only prep and load in batches. So with 9mm I'll prep about 1500 pcs at a time then store them until I'm ready to load them.
