    Why Varget?

Just trying to build my understanding a bit here. I see that Varget seems to be the odds on favorite for 223.

IMR 3031 us sinething I was considering using iespecially in the absence of Varget. What is it about Varget that makes it so much more desireable?

Personally, I like IMR 4895 better.

Apparently, Varget meters better through powder dispensers. IMR 4895 gets stuck.

However, unlike IMR 4895, Varget it not sensitive to temperature changes.

      It's an all season powder.

IMR 3031 does not meter well at all, I used up 2 pounds I had and ended up hand weighing each charge....a lot of .223. The rounds functioned great but hardly worth the effort though. Just loaded some with 24.3 gr. of Accurate Arms 2230 wich is easier to get, they seem accurate enough for my AR-15 with iron sights to me.

Not temp sensitive, and meters surprisingly well for stick powder. Also very accurate in my .223's.

Varget, because of it's composition, density and burn rate, make it ideal for use in a gas operated rifle that shoots 223 Rem. It happens to also be accurate across a wide range of bullets.

Varget is the fancier grade gas, while H335 is like regular, will get the job done but not the fancy. Chances are civilians arent going to shoot in super hot or super cold temps. I save my varget for my "match rds"

Thats the only powder I use, but then all I reload are .308 and recently.223. I have been out of the loop what the deal on availability of Varget? Im down to about 2lbs but I read here that the 8lbs are hard to impossible to get now.

i found out that you can make a key gunpowder component by urinating on straw and letting it sit for a few months before leaching out the active ingredient. I believe this will be faster and cheaper

Well, now if someone can come up with a way to make primers from old beer cans I'll be good to go.
