    reloading .308

Question---I have three factory 308 rounds PPU, Fiocchi and WIN. Overall length on factory loads are 2.700 to 2.710. My Lee book calls for minimum OAL of 2.800 and the Lyman calls for 2.775. (168 grain bullet). Can someone explain the differences to me? Thank you

Variances in oal are due to bullet types, measuring the bullet at the bullet ogive will give you a more consistent oal measurement.

Load the type of bullet in your book to OAL stated in said book after double checking with another book.

R u measuring factory fmj? Or BTHP? The former should be 2.700” and the latter 2.800”

Short answer is that your reloading manual is stating specs for reloading ammunition (generally using specific sets of components.)

Ammo manufacturers do not necessarily go by reloading data, but rather verify pressure by testing their loaded ammo. They may load to specs that, according to the reloading manual, are "wrong", but test out as being within their spec range.
