    Vintage ammo info 50-95 Express

I recently acquired a box of UMC .50-95 Express ammo for the "New Colt Lightning Magazine Rifle" and cannot find any information on it anywhere.
Does anybody have any information on what it is, scarcity, age, etc?

    Thanks,

    Cliff

Better known as .50-95 Winchester or Winchester Express

According to the Internet Reloading Manual Index in Row 1473, there are 5 references currently listed. It slowly does get updated and is not compreshive, but can be very helpful

Those include Donnelly's "Handloader's Manual of Cartridge Conversions" which states you can form the brass from .450 #2 Nitro Express.

Maj. George Nonte Jr.'s "Modern Handloading" lists a load of 23.0 grn. of 2400 with a 300 grn. bullet.

Barnes' "Cartridges of the World" covers this round in many if not all of the fifteen editions. Here's his take:

Mattern's "Handloading Ammunition" offers this table:

Mattern suggests to only use black powder in Colt rifles, but the smokeless powder selection in his time was pretty poor.

Farrow's "American Small Arms" has two images of it but nothing in the text

      and this

Bussard's 4th Ed. of "Ammo Encyclopedia" covers it as well.

      Enjoy your rounds
