    I think I boovbooed

    Loaded some 44s.
    300 grain xtp.
    20 grains w296.
    Using a 629 with 6.5 barrel.
The only crimp die I had was a redding taper die. I read I need a roll crimp. None of my 3 sets have a roll crimp.
    Rcbs is a seater/crimper.
    Ch bull same.
    Redding same.
Now what? Am I going to kaboom?

If it head spaces, I'd try it but keep checking the bullet position of the other rounds in the gun after each shot till I get comfortable with the taper.
In the mean time, I would get a roll crimp.
    But that's just me.
Actually, I probably would have asked this question before loading them.
    Again, that's just me.

      No kabooms.
But under recoil, maybe the unfired rounds in the other chambers will have the bullets move forward and in the worst case will tie up the cylinder to frame.
Shoot a couple and see what happens to the unfired rounds still in the gun.
If the bullets "jump" as it's called, you either need to fire them one at a time or get a roll crimp die and re-crimp.

I think you can unscrew the seating stem in the RCBS die and use it for a crimp only on the loaded cartridges.

What RMM said. Inexpensive and easy to use. Game changer.

Are you 100% positive your die is taper crimp? I ask because both the steel and carbide 3 die sets from RCBS are roll crimp sets. You have to buy the taper crimp seater/crimp die as a separate die.

Just went back and re read your post. I see you don't have a RCBS die set so I now understand your taper crimp question.
I have been handloading for 30+ years and I doubt that a taper crimp on your 44 mag loads will hold up with the recoil. You may get 3 or even 4 rounds to fire but by the 5th or 6th I bet they will have slid out enough to lock up the cylinder.
Better to go back and correct now before that happens and creates an even bigger problem.
            Good luck and Safe Shooting.
            10-4 will do.

                All as mentioned above:

You can shoot them, but watch for bullet creep.

Your RCBS set seating die has a roll crimp and is all that RCBS has for the 44. Back out the seating stem, set the crimp and run'm through. You might not get the same crimp as you would with a full case mouth, but it will hold better. Then, go out and buy a Lee Factory Crimp Die. This takes all of the guess work out of setting up a combo seating/crimp die.

You can also tear them down and start over. Just remove the decapping pin from the sizing die so your primers will stay put.

OK, my bad. I only looked at 3-die sets on the RCBS website and they only list "sets" as having the roll crimp for the 44.

I would load two and shoot one and look at the second for creep. Then maybe add 3 rounds and shoot them as well. You only showed 50 or so loaded rounds. I'd shoot them and then reload the cases with a taper crimp next time. The neck tension if done correctly will be ok. Just look for bullet creep and adjust your loading accordingly.

Well they shot fine. No case jump [emoji2] and I still have all my fingers.
On a serious note. The 20 grains of h110/196 seems a bit light.
Next batxh of 300 grains I will up the charge to 22 grains as well as a roll crimp.
                        Thank y'all

Doesn't the manual mention something about not using 110/296 for light loads....And with those powder strongly recommends what kind of crimp?

                            20grs under a 300 is not a light load

J-Cat, I don't have the reloading manuals handy and I never memorize powder quantities. So I'll be glad to take your word for it until I make it back to the reloading room.

dkonria says it's, "...seems a bit light." Not me, I didn't say it.
