    9mm line on bullet

    Hello,

It's my first time reloading 9mm and I noticed a line on the bullets after seating. I'm curious as to why it is doing that? I set the resizing die properly I believe. I also feel like I expanded the brass enough. Just curious to what your guys thoughts are.

    Thanks,

    John

It's your seating die.....might try turning the seating cup upside down.....I had an issue with a bullet seater doing that and had to file down the seating cup so it wouldn't contact the side of the bullet. It happens.
If you want change you have to put in your 2 cents, you can't just sit on the sidelines and whine.

Is the seating cup out of spec? Or is that the normal contact point?

        Its normal on plated bullets.

        I'm guessing a redding die?

It's a hornady die. I figure it will run fine. It's just target rounds anyway. But I was just making sure there wasn't something in the process I was doing wrong

Top right corner of your box should be a 2nd seating stem. See if that fits your profile any better.

If not just ease the force of your stroke while seating if the ring bothers you.

Yes, I would change the seating stem. You may be trying to seat and crimp at the same time. That will enhance the pressure ring as well.

Awesome thanks fellas. I got the American series dies. So it did not come with an extra seating stem. But I can order one. Which one do you guys suggest?

Shoot it....if its accurate enough for you I would leave it alone. Had the same kind of line on plated bullets. I just shot them.

I just think die manufactures can't take in to account for all bullet profiles...so some don't go together well.

I have had the same issue with different die brands using plated bullets on various calibers. I got the Dremel out and used a rubberized abrasive tip to break the edge on the seating stem. The good news is that it looks like your bullets are snugly seated.

I have Hornady dies as well, my 9mm and 45 leave the same marks on the Ogive with every plated bullet or non Hornady bullet I have used. Hornady does not make another seating stem for RN bullets in either of those calibers, I have tried. There are a few options, you can mix up JB-Weld or squirt hot glue in to the seating stem then press a lubed bullet into the stem to form a custom seater. Careful with the JB-Weld its a one shot deal. The hot glue is more forgiving and you can practice getting it right before moving to JB-Weld. I have made a few for various brands of bullets because I like the Hornady seating dies. Google it, you will find tutorials out there. One other option look into RCBS seating dies, I bought the RCBS 45 seating die and it works perfectly with he Xtreme RN bullet. Additionally you can send three bullets into RCBS with a payment and they will make a custom seater for you. I had one made for some Polycoat bullets I bought a few thousand of in 9mm.

Are you seating and crimping with the same die? If not, does this show up when you seat the bullet or when you crimp? If it shows up on seating only, do as ol_shooter says and dremel the sharp edge inside the seating stem.

I am seating a crimping at the same time. It also does it when just seating. I think at this point I will shoot the 50 rounds I reloaded and see if everything runs fine. I'm not to worried about 9mm plinking ammo. Obviously if I was making hand loads for accuracy I would be more concerned.

Just an update. Shot the 50 rounds I loaded and they function fine with no hiccups. I fired them in a few CZs and a Springfield 9mm 1911
