700X works well in 45acp. But it smokes 3x as much compared to W231. Combine 700X with a wet bullet lube and a 1911 night shoot

W231 powder more times than not will also have an anti-flash additive. You need to test individual lot numbers.

Anyone shooting 700X needs no excuses. It is a great powder and most popular in the Cowboy Action shooters for good reason.

My 1978 Speer manual spelled it out and I thought that by now experienced reloaders knew about it. Oh well.

Bench Rest Pistol Competitors swear by Unique powder to this day because it probably holds more than a few accuracy records. Pistol Actons shooters such as myself swear at Unique powder for 3 or 4 reasons to be mentioned at a later date.
read what you are posting? un burnt powder. I'm sorry unique is not that slow of a powder to do this. Unless you are running extremely light bullets with extremely light loads. Sorry I've been using unique for nearly as long as you and have never seen any unburned kernels in the gun.

I think you are just biased against Unique and red dot. that or you are shooting minimum power loads for your action shooting. and that would be the reason, I'm not recommending reduced loads and I never will recommend reduced loads, Unique, red dot and bull eye are my go to powders and they work and work just fine. So you base this opinion on a manual from 1978. Thats like saying our phone system sucks because they are all rotary and you can't make a long distance call without and operator. Well maybe in 1978 but not in 2018, do you think that maybe just maybe the formulation might have changed slightly over time?

Sorry but 1. I've never have any pistol jam due to excessive powder fouling. 2. the only time I had a pistol jam was due to bad ammo, or the one instance when a friend dropped his gun in the sand and failed to clean it and it did jam with sand due to being over oiled. Unburnt powder though... Nope sorry I've never seen it and am betting against it.

FYI on primers. I have had no issues switching back and forth between large pistol and large pistol magnum in the 45 ACP. I only used the magnums when i ran out of regular and there was a slight difference in recoil but barely enough to notice, I also didn't back my powder charge down either.

              Then Buy This:

If you didn't notice the crud left behind in your revolvers then you were not paying too much attention or you were using the newly formulated Unique as both are referenced in the above article.

In the 1960s & 70s, articles in the American Rifleman Magazines published the kind of powder the pistol competitors were using and I assure you it wasn't very often Unique. When I came on board in the 80s I can't remember a single Action Shooter loading Unique in 45acp or 38 Special.

I have seemed to have attracted a few doubters to this claim. So I humbly ask where have you been because I haven't seen you shooting copious amounts of 45s & 38s with reloaded ammo and Unique throughout the years.

At Chabot during this time, there was one PPC competitor who just loved using Red Dot in his reduced 38 Special rounds. He was good. And he could not have been good without having good ammunition. So in this case the exception proves the rule I suppose.

Unique obviously remains a popular pistol as well as shotgun powder for good reasons I'm sure. Great. I see a future experiment using both the old and the new Unique. And when the video camera shows clear evidence of my early claims then I will look forward to receiving a MacDonald's gift card good for a #7 at the drive thru.

you realize the info/article you posted is ALMOST 9yrs old right? and while you think unique sucks thousands of guys disagree with you so there might be a slight chance that YOU and your OUTDATED info are wrong.

Well I still say it’s BS, revolver claims are probably true. But you would foul up and be filthy too if you had a .010” gap between the chamber and barrel. That type of fouling takes a few thousand rounds in an autoloader.

That a name dropping John Haviland is not doing you any good to the credibility to the story. He’s a far from well respected author and only seems to parrot off what the advertisers line card reads.
It’s one reason I don’t and have not subscribed to a gun publication in over 20 years. They are nothing but one long advertisement and not only bias as hell most are just flat wrong.

“But the gun magazine I read says I’m right”
I’ve got data that says my .220 Swift will burn up a barrel in 500 rounds or less. But the information is from the 40’s

The article that I referenced supports your claims of Unique.

I found it significant because I had no idea that Unique powder received an update.
Apparently you have a beef with gun industry magazine business model and its authors. Fine. You are not alone. So where is your written contribution to the shooting sports industry that supports the betterment of Reloading hobbyist?

                      longrange1

When did I say Unique power "sucks"? That is your critical thinking skills at work, not mine. I don't know why many reloaders are so stridently loyal to one particular pistol powder. Especially when tens of thousands of current Action Shooters who are familiar with Unique and who Reload as a means to maintain their hobby do not chose to use Unique.

You posed longrange’s handle over the wrong set of complaints.

There is nothing printed in monthly gun magazines that pushes the betterment of the hobby/sport. They do however push for sales.

I’ve got 10,322 posts for your firarms related entertainment and education. Well that and I’m not trying to earn a living with “look at me” articles.

BTW HamBam105 I am still using unique powder from the 70's or there abouts, When did a can of Bullseye and Unique cost less then $5.00?? cause I have a can with a price tag on it. Coles $4 and some change. When I started reloading powder was about $7 a pound in 1990

Problem is about 80% is just me arguing and going off on a rant not very productive use of band width Still entertaining though Oh and to be clear I'm not trying to pull seniority, I think post counts are BS, All a High post count means is I like to run my yapper

So back to issue at hand. Again feel free to use what you can get, and Unique while may not be the choice for light competition loads certainly works fine for me.
