    308 Semi-auto load

    Hi folks,

I have a M1A Socom I want to reload for. I currently am using Varget with SMK 168 grain BTHP for my Bergara HMR. My question is would Varget work fine with a semi auto? Or what your guys experiences are. I am new to reloading and would appreciate input.

    Thanks in advance.

    John

Varget will be good powder for your M1A with a range of bullets.

I have run 148’s to 178’s from my M1A with varget and no issues. I did upgrade to smith enterprises forged operating rod though. We started with a standard model M1A.

I haven’t loaded 168’s in a while, but I recall somewhere in the 44ish grains neighborhood of varget with military WCC cases.

The M1A being based on the M1 Garand is sensitive to powder burn rate, but not nearly as bad as the Garand is. Varget is listed at the same burn rate as IMR 4895 so I would say you are fine, I would not go slower than IMR 4320

Varget works well with 168's in the M14/M1A. In the shorter barreled M1A 41.5 to 42.0gr in commercial or military brass is a good load.

Awesome thanks guys. I loaded up some today with Varget 42 grains. I decided to use some Hornady 150 grain SP.
