FYI - If you build your test lads at range , don't take a little powder
and then return whats left to container when you get home .
I used to build my loads in the field and when time to leave , the
extra powder was dumped on the fire that was out . Yes , a couple
of time it ignited - learned to shovel the ashes

no, chemical reaction with the chemicals left in the powder from manufacturing, given enough heat and time from poor storage all powder degrades and off gasses nitric acid.

I don't agree,

Powder should never be stored in anything other that the original container, a powder measure hopper, or in the ammo, and for the bench rest guys glass test tubes with natural cork toppers. I take powder to the field all the time reload on the tailgate of my truck and pack it all up when done, no powder is wasted in the fire pit.

I probably used different powder . Mine was dry and would suck
water out of air .
When hunting my loads changed with location . Coast was more
humid . Inland dryer most of time , but rain and or snow happened .
I did not really consider dumping powder on a cold fire a waste , but
I also pissed on it and dumped the ice chest on it .
The powder was in one to 3 baby food jars .
Now I seldom build loads away from house . I know what I want in
the reload and can get really close at home and they charge by hour
at range and people here get upset when you are tying up slot and
not shooting . While there are generally at least 2 of us , Stop shooting
so I can try this load - that meant no one was chasing the MT's .while I
was reloading , not to mention the stuff in the air at range
Do you hunt ? Only shoot when dry ? Are fires allwd where you
shoot / hunt ? Several times there was hunting allowed but no open fires
