    need 45 70 load advise

I have a New Uberti 1885 45 70 , I formulated some low base loads for my boy recoil. Current load is 300 grain Meister cast rnfp over 43 grains imr 4895 1350 fps. I have quite a few remington 300 grain jhp bullets. Looking at loading tables there is nothing for this low of velocity. I am thinking of going with the same 43 grains of imr 4895. Other than the obvious reason that the remington 300 grn jhp are hunting bullets, shouldn't it be ok and be approximate velocity as the cast load.

    Please advise

Starting load for 300 Sierra HP is 58 grains IMR 4895 I’d think it would be the same for your Remington bullets.
I use either Varget or IMR 4895 when I’m not using Swiss 1.5 Fg BP.

Cast bullets & black powder is the way to go! I have 2 Sharps rifles, and neither of them has ever seen smokeless powder nor jacketed bullets, ....
and is so much easier to clean. if you get the bullet lube right it just takes 5 to 6 patches to clean the barrel, then wipes it down with oil, good to go.

I know the starting load is 58 grains for the bullets but at 1850 FPS to much recoil for my son. I know black powder and cast bullets are cheaper. My question is there a problem with loading the JHP 300 down to 43 grains of IMR 4895. I already Own the Remington bullets. Thanks Anybody?

I have maybe a 100, 300 gr cast I’ll give you & if your not local to me San Diego pay for shipping in a flat rate box & I’ll mail them to you. I also have some 405 gr if you think your son can handle the extra weight.
I’m not sure if it’s still true but we used to worry about JHP bullets losing their jackets at low FPS

+1. These repos are not like modern rifles I believe. 4895 is a smokeless rifle powder. I'd be afraid to use it. Rifle goes the wrong kind of boom.

Thank you for the generous offer! I have 300 grain cast bullets. I am just trying to find out if I can load the jhp non cast 300 grains down to the same 43 grains without a problem. Thanks again

If you used the Trapdoor data should be okay.

Have you tried trail boss powder? I used that for low recoil rounds. Works great.

Yes. Trail boss works great for low recoil rounds in my 45-70.

I wouldn't use Trail Boss with jacketed bullets. Copper plated, OK.

Years ago I had a Lee 500 grain mold I used Unique Powder was zero or close to it recoil BUT I was always concerned because the load only used something like 11.0 grains and that is a big case for 11 grains. I was shooting these out of my Sharps so easy to tilt the round up making sure all powder down around primer load was accurate but I'd never run them in my Marlin. When loaded and sat on their base sort of looked like mini cruise missiles!!
