    reloading for the AR15

I've been reloading for almost 40 years.
This is my first time loading for an AR15.

Question is...what primer should I use. In my bolt action 223, I use CCI small rifle. Do I need to use a military type primer, such as the CCI #41?

What about slam fires? What do you use?

    Take care

I use the same CCI SEP for my .223 reloads for my AR. From what I understand CCI's are one of the hardest brand of primers and have not had a slamfire with the hundreds of reloads I have fired. Anecdotal I know but as far as I am concerned you should be gtg.

        I use CCI#41
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.

I use WSR; CCI 400, BR-4, and 41; and Wolf. Never a slam fire.

You're going to get about a 50/50 split vote between standard and magnum primers. I have used CCI 400 SRP with H335 for going on 4 years now without one single problem. The 400's are what was available when I started loading and I stuck with them.

It’s recommended to use a milspec primer.

That said I’ve reloaded for my AR’s for close to 30 years and never had an issue

                Thanks guys.

I know that milspec is what is recommended. I can't find any in my area.
I might make a order to Midway. Not sure yet...and I'm in no hurry.

Another vote for CCI 400...never had slam fire issues. Thousands of rounds of 223 reloaded over the course of 8 years or so. I have never used military spec primers.

Grafs has mil spec small rifle on sale, it least they were last week and 10.00 haz mat. I use those because one slam fire is not worth the risk. Most of those have floating firing pins.

For 223 gas gun, use one of the following:

                      a) Rem 7 1/2 BR
                      b) CCI 450
                      c) CCI BR4

Now if you can get your hands on Wolf or Tula Small Rifle Magnum primers, do it since the primer cup is hard and thick its OD is similar to CCI BR4.

Just realize that no one in this thread using all kinds of primers have had a slamfire. The 400s are perfectly fine, or whatever you choose.

Proper FL sizing about 0.003" shorter than the fired case, making sure that the primer is not seated high or sticking out from the primer pocket, and choosing a primer with a primer cup that is hard and thick.

Large Rifle primers have a standardized cup thickness but Small Rifle primers have a range in terms of cup thickness. For bolt gun in 223, CCI 400 is good but a 223 gas gun, to err on the side of caution, it's best to use a primer with a thicker cup.
