Safe way to pull a projectile without a bullet-puller?

I'm selling some Norinco 7.62x51 ammo in the Marketplace. One of the posters mentioned that it is steel core. Another poster is curious if it is and so am I... How should I proceed without a puller? I thought I might try gently working it out with a pair of pliers??? Is this stupid? Any other ideas? Please advise. I'd really like to know if the ammo is steel core but don't want any accidents... Thank you.

If you don't mind damaging the case and bullet you can use pliers; vice grips are preferable.

be careful about not smacking the primer; don't let the case go flying if you slip!

now usually steel core will have some lead in it... so you are probably going to have to use a propane torch to melt out the lead and see if there is something solid inside

+1 just use a magnet, no need to waste a round.

        Shoot it ?

Ive used pliers before with no issues
just work it back and forth and side to side and it will come out
brass will be garbage after you do that though

+2, Steel core or steel jacket. My 7.62x54r s steel jacketed or plated what ever it is, it doesnt have a core and its magnet attractive.

If your wanting to pull bullets, the safest way to pull is......by a bullet puller hammer. Their only 18 bucks.

Pliers are fine. Relax it's not going to magically explode and kill you. It'll just wreck the bullet. A magnet won't tell you if its steel core. It could be bi-metal jacketed and still attract a magnet.(which is probably what they actually want to know) But if you really gotta know. Pull the slug and cut it in half with a cutoff wheel, hack saw, diagonal cutters, whatever... and see.

                  I'll probably resort to pliers...

I don't mean to make a bigger deal out of pulling the projectile than it actually is. I'd feel a bit better about using pliers if the case was brass. Steel case and at least a steel jacketed projectile. It wouldn't spark as I'm wiggling it apart would it? Not being supported by a chamber I guess the case would burst if it happened to go off. I still would not want to be the guy holding it if a mishap were to occur. There wouldn't happen to be a member near Redondo Beach that has a inertia bullet-puller by chance?

Use the pliers cutting side, or standalone cutters to cut off top half of the projectile. If you manage to do that (steel jacket isn't that strong as you may think), it's not steel core. And smokeless powder isn't that sensitive to sparks - takes a decent amount of hit to light it up. Method suggested is not good for the tip-painted projectiles

just grab the bullet with pliers and wiggle the case back and forth and up and down and pull then sweep up all the powder that goes everywhere

hold the bullet on a belt sander till it is cross sectioned i used a bit of a blueing pen to see if there was any steel with the lead

i found that the boat tail chinese x39 is often steel core the flat base stuff is lead core in a steel jacket

RCBS makes a bullet puller die. You buy the Die & collet for the size you need. About $50. if you have a press.

I pull about 6 bullets to every one w/ a hammer type puller.
Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...

I belong to the group that uses firearms, and knows which bathroom to use.
